Mason County freshman posted their 16th consecutive victory Wednesday night with a 79 to 36 victory over Pendleton County. Jeris Carver and Jordan Gilbert led the Royals with 14 points apiece. Donovan Orta, Neal Pawsat, and Tyler Berry were also in double figures with 11 points apiece. The Royals host the 39th District Tournament this Saturday. Mason plays St.Pat at 10am, with Bracken Co vs. Augusta at 11:15a.m. The finals are slated to begin at approxiamately at 12:30 pm.

No, actually I'd say the average sophomore turns 16 the summer before or during their sophomore year.. most do. At least pretty much all of the sophomores I know did. And if not, then they have their birthday the summer before their junior year, but they are considered young then. These kids are right on track with their age.

 

A normally placed freshman enters the freshman year at 14 years of age or they turn 15 before the end of the calendar year. It is not normal to be a 16 year old freshman even if the birthday is in the fall.

To put an emphasis on education and not athletics. I think kids that are held back during their middle school years, should automatically lose a year of High school eligibility. Maybe their parents would work more with them on the books than on the jump shots. Just an idea!

I'm not bitter and I personally did not say any of Mason's Kids were 16. I think it's wrong to hold a kid back in school for athletic reasons. If they struggle academically it's different. And if they struggle academically, they should spend more time getting knowledge. School sports is a privilege and it should be earned by doing what you're in school for first. If you can't maintain your grade level academically, you should not be able to maintain full athletic eligibility, whether it's the parents choice or not. But not everyone thinks that way. Didn't mean to strike a nerve.

Congratulations to the Royals' freshman squad; keep it up. I'd love to be there tomorrow, but I'm committed to working at the indoor track meet at Mason County's facility at the Jockey building. We'll be lucky to be finished by 1:00 or 1:30.

The Royals defeated Bracken County in the finals by a score of 82 to 23. Treg Setty, Neal Pawsat, and Josh Menefee led the Royals with 12 points apiece. Also in double figures was Jordan Gilbert and BJ Perry with 10. The Royals (18-1) now advance to the 10th Regional Tournament next week at the 38th District winner.

Who won the tourney? I have been out of town and didn't see it posted.

Mason County plays Deming at 730pm.

Both games are Wednesday at Campbell County.

2 winners advance to finals on Thursday at 7pm.

So you are saying, there is no need to play and everyone is going to roll over and let Mason just waltz in and take the title. Everyone knows it just doesnt happen this way, just look at last years 10th region tourney. That is why kids lace up the sneakers and compete. Good luck to all teams involved.
