Mason Freshman

Featured Replies

The maturity and strength between a 14 and a 15 or 16 year old freshman is considerable. But any parent that holds their child back a year just so can play sports is not thinking of the child just themselves.

Completely agree!

Why worry about situations you have no control over. If you are a parent ,you know what is best for your child, no one else does. Why would you care if a kid was held back to play sports or not.

As has been discussed many times here on BGP, this is a decision made by parents. In my daughter's case, if she had been born one hour later, she would have had an October 1 birthdate. As it is, we did not hold her back even though she has ALWAYS been the youngest in her class. Has it put her at a slight disadvantage in sports - yes; but we realized a long time ago that sports for her would be for fun and not to somewhere down the line put food on the table. We have seen no disadvantages in other areas at all; in fact, from an intellectual/scholastic perspective, I believe that the challenge of "keeping up" with classmates that are on average 6 months older can be a good thing.

And I have heard conflicting reports re. the younger Setty brother as to whether he was held back or not.

I will use myself as an example. I was very thin during high school . I played my last game in high school when I was 17. I made 2nd team all state in basketball and received a D1 basketball scholarship and had a hard time the first 2 years ,but I became physically mature during my jr and sr years in college and it really made a difference and made me a much stronger and better player. I only wish my parents had held me back, my argument. I don't know if Treg Setty was held back or not but if he was it will benefit him in the future.

What # is Setty on the team? If he is #32, I wasn't that impressed with his game. Reading this board you would've thought he was the second coming of Darius.

Probably could find out from the Peebles, OHIO schools system if he was held back or not.

Sounds like you did very well in high school and then after you got to college you needed to develop a little more. That would have been the time to consider a red shirt year. When childen are in grade school or middle school, sports should not be the primary concern of the child or parent. Let the kids be kids and when they get more mature(college age) and they are good enough to go to the next level let them decide what they want to do.

Setty is number 14.

Setty could be very impressive if he would work on his mid range game and inside game more. He is 6'6" and wants to play primarily outside. While I agree this could get him a scholarship if he wants to be a complete player he should work on all aspects of his game. I would love to see him play more from 15' in.

He, being Neal Pawsat, got a lot of minutes in varsity last night, and was impressive in my opinion. He had 7 points in the only quarter he got to play, and really fought for those points. He has good size for a freshman, and I think he'll be a good one.

#32 is not very aggressive, especially when the ball is not in his hands. He wants to be a guard when #10 should handle the ball out front at all times. #32 will not grow another inch and is not that good of a basketball player in my opinion.

Pawsat is very aggresive, he was on the floor several times last night fighting for loose balls, etc. In a quarter of action, he tallied 7 points and 5 rebounds. As far as is growing, his brother was 6'4", so he may have a spurt over the summer. IMO he is an excellent player that will only get better. He has the 3 H's on his side plus talent. Only time will tell with the development of this young man.

He will be the best player Mason Co has after Middleton graduates. He has size, plays under control, and is fundamentally sound. He is going to be a good one!

Setty is Mason Co. best freshmen in my opinion. Height and ability to stroke it from three. You can't teach height. If he gets stronger, Setty is their next superstar.

Maybe they both can be stars!
