MOST? How about ALL?

 

That newspaper used to be good about 30 years ago before it was bought and sold and bought again by big outside corporations trying to squeeze every last drop of profit out of it. They cut staff, and cut staff, and relied more on AP wire feeds than in hitting the bricks and doing actual reporting on a local level.

 

They still have some good writers and photographers there, they are just spread too thin. The result is a lot of teams get overlooked until the big games roll around.

I look foward to reading the preview. IMO the Indpendent does a good job on it and the football preview.

Vols Fan I'll give you some props even if nobody else will, its been this way forever If Ashland gets beat by 30 the headline will say" Ashland Tripped Up" You learn to smile and go on and realize that people look at our small school differently, I just tell them jealousy is such an ugly emotion

They have yet to cover a game this season.

There were several girls games Monday night and Lewis played last night.

Why no coverage?

 

Reason 1:

Girls Games...no one really cares until March, and some dont care at all.

Lewis Co. How far away is Lewis Co. from the Ashland area? 40-50 miles, longer?? I doubt anyone that lives in Lewis Co. subscribes to the Daily Independent, also most people in the Ashland area couldnt care less about Lewis Co. Do you think the Daily Independent should waste the gas money and man power to send a reporter and/or photographer to Lewis Co.? Seriously....

Yes many people subscribe to the Daily Independent in Lewis County including my parents.

Plus the game was at Coal Grove which is 10 minutes from Ashland.

Plus there was no other games in the area.

Adam told me today there has been a glitch in some stuff over there and most games will be covered the rest of the season.

Yes Ashland should worry about other area teams in hoops since no region titles have been on Blazer Blvd since they have been on Red Devil Lane, Viking Drive, and Lion Lane in Sandy Hook.

and no I dont remember far enough back for the 1920's national championships.

Thankfully there are posters like onetoya and LRCW from the Ashland camp on BGP.

OK, you have a valid point. 2 out of the 800 people who live in Lewis Co. subscribe to the Daily Independent. Coal Grove is in another state and shouldnt be mentioned in the Daily Independent, unless they are playing a school that is in the general vicinity of Ashland like Russell, BC, maybe even Raceland. But honestly do you think anyone is interested in reading an article about Lewis Co. (one of the weaker teams in the region) vs. Coal Grove (probably a weak team in Ohio)? I really doubt it. Now if they had specifically not covered this game to do an article about Buddy Biggs' favorite flavor of ice cream, or Matt Thomas' favorite subject in school then your point might hold some water.

 

You can make the typical comments about 1920's this and 1920's that. But the simple fact is Ashland has been a dominant fixture in the 16th region as long as anyone can remember. If you cant understand that then the problem is not with me. Just because Russell has 1 region championship in like 30+ years doesn't really speak positively about the state of their basketball program....honestly thats pretty sad. Especially to throw up a massive 27 points when they finally made it to Rupp. Honestly I have no problem with Elliott Co. I really respect their talent, and enjoy how they play. But it will be hard for them to maintain this level of talent with the size of their school. That is why larger schools usually have an easier time fielding competitive teams. There will be time for every school where talent will rise and fall. Ashland and BC both had dominant teams in the mid 90's and Ashland had a couple great teams with Beach and Surgalski in the early 2000's. BC has seen a dramatic drop in talent over the last 6 or 7 years. Russell will be experiencing that this season and possibly for the next several. I'm fully prepared for the rise and fall, because I know that throughout my life the rises always out number the falls on Blazer Blvd.

The Daily Independent always has the best previews in the state IMO, and does a great job of covering all the local schools the best they can. They are obviously limited to how many teams they can cover per night. I do have a suggestion for you UT Vol Fan. Why don't you call the Independent and volunteer to cover your school and submit a game report for each game. I'm sure the DI would love to have your help.

 

Thats not entirely true!! I have submitted more than one game score and nice game report to them when a particular game wasn't in the paper, and they didn't get printed so I would say he would be wasting his time!!!!

I hate to defend the ADI. However, what school does the majority of their subscribers support?

 

Most of their sub's might be from Ashland but that must not be enough because they call my house at least once a week wanting me to sub up. I would venture to say that if ashland supporters or the whole city of Ashland were all that bought their paper they would not be in business very long!!

When Ashland returns to glory talk it up till then play second fiddle to the new region powers.

Forgot to mention the region title that was won on Cougar Lane over some team from this area a few years back.
