Belfry would have to make a lot of mistakes for it happen, a lot.

 

Friday night we will all know.

I hope you're right. If Belfry's offense is nothing special, then it should be a close, low scoring game, because Breathitt has a pretty good defense. But, I agree, if Breathitt's offense can't do anything and their defense has to stay on the field all game, then they'll eventually wear down. That's just a fact of life in football.

 

Hopefully, Breathitt can get off to a good start, get a lead and maintain it. I really don't want to have to play catch up again this week. Obviously, the perfect game would be for Breathitt to get off to a fast start and get Belfry into a catch up game. If we could have a 2 score lead in the second half, our chances go way up. However, that's probably not likely. :lol:

 

Breathitt has a chance in this game. They're going to have to play better than they did last week at Russell, IMO, but they are capable. They have the talent...they're a pretty young team, so you never know how they'll respond in big situations. I think they showed a lot of heart by coming back from 10 down with less than 10 minutes to play and winning at Russell. They just can't afford to repeat that against Belfry.

 

If Breathitt can limit their mistakes...stupid penalties, turnovers, missed tackles, special teams gaffes, etc...then I think this will be a very close and competitive football game. This is high school football, so there are probably going to be some mistakes, but Breathitt has to limit them, and the ones they do make can't be catastrophic. If they make too many mistakes, and if they're costly mistakes, then Belfry will roll on with another blowout victory. (see playoff game vs. P'burg in 2004 when Breathitt turned the ball over, played terrible and fell behind 34-6 before they ever got anything going).

 

I feel the same about Belfry as well though...if they make mistakes and allow Breathitt to build a big lead, they're in trouble. They're not built to score quick and come from behind, so if they fall behind and get in a situation where they need points in a short time, it probably won't go well for them.

 

Breathitt played about as well as I think they could last week. Very few mistakes. They will need to reapeat that to have a chance.

If Breathitt can jump out to a lead, any lead, it will be interesting to see how Belfry responds. So far this season they have never been behind in a game. Hard to say how they might react to having to play catch up.

Belfry's offense is not the great concern in this game. They are good but not special. May and Lee are good backs not great. The offensive line is excellent.

 

The biggest weapon that Belfry has is their defense and in particular their defensive line. If Breathitt can move the ball consistantly and not turn it over this becomes a very close game. If Belfry's defense dominates and continually gives their offense the ball then Belfry will win going away.

 

As the year has gone on I have noticed that Belfry seems to get alot of big plays out of their special teams as well. I think Breathitts defense will be fine. Can there offense keep them in the game is the biggest question I have.

 

I agree with this post. I think the thing that scares me most in this game is Breathitt being able to put up some points on this Belfry defense. I think the one thing that alot of people are over looking here is Breathitt has a pretty darn good defense too. They have played some decent teams on the year and really outside of LCA no one has put up many points on the starting defense. They held Russell without a TD in the entire first half and held Prestonsburg to one TD on the game. Those were both games that Breathitt would not have won had it not been for solid defense because they sure didn't rack up alot of points. I really do not see this being a high scoring game either. I would almost go as far to say that 21 points may very well win this game for either team.

I don't think they had alot of mistakes and the defense I thought played a good game, but in my opinion I thought the offense could have played better in that game especially in the first half. They had the ball 2 times first and goal (1 of those may have been in 3rd qtr) and came away with no points. I know you have to give Russell's defense some credit, but that was not good execution on Breathitt's part to not at least get 7 out of one of those 1st and goals. I thought in the the 4th when their backs were against the wall they executed well when they needed to the most.

Nope. I haven't seen them since last year. But although undoubtedly improved, I don't believe that May, Lee and Elkins are that much better than a year ago. Now the offensive line returning intact sure has to help.

That is not meant as a slam against them. I know what they had comming back and compared to some of the other offenses in 3A I don't consider them far and away above the rest. Now on defense thats different. I think this defense is very special and that is what will win this game and the next one.

Honestly I thought both teams played well last week in that one. Russell made very few mistakes as well. Breathitt only had one turnover and 3 penalties. Its hard to play much more mistake free than that.

 

As for the redzone chances. That offense gets easier to defend the closer you get to the goal line.

Belfry just keeps impressing me as the weeks go along. Before the year if someone had told me that we would be 13-0 and region champions I couldnt have believed it. I thought our chances against Corbin in the season opener were about 50-50 and they proved me wrong with an unreal defensive effort. Then against Pikeville and Sheldon Clark I was pleasantly surprised again. The one game where I really started to believe that this team had every component to win the 3A title was against Johnson Central. Complete domination against a deeper, quicker and supposedly stronger team. With that being said I would be utterly shocked to see the Pirates come out and lay an egg tomorrow night. They played some very athletic, strong and well coached teams to this point and none have seemed to be able to crack the shell of the Pirates. Believe me, Breathitt Co. always scares me and I have to admit I was glad we didnt have to face them in '03 and '04 because it seems they always find a way to give us a heck of a game. Again Im anxious and to a point somewhat scared but I believe the Pirates will find a way to once again "pleasantly surprise" me with the outcome of this game.

You would honestly be suprised, but those two have worked really hard in the offseason and are much improved, Ivan is a lot more physical than he was last season, and May is a little bigger and a little quicker. Plus the line is much improved and several other backs have picked up the game, and on top of that another year of experience never hurts.

So I would honestly say you would be suprised at how much better this offense has improved from the Russell game alst year, to this point this season.
