FRom what I have heard they have had several people apply. I am not going to give out any names on here but you would be surprised at some of the big name candiates. I also hear that they are going to interveiw several of them. LIke 9 or 10. :eek:

I don't know how appealing the job would be to a big time coach. From the way I understand it the Admin of the district is not too worried and supportive of the Athletics at Southern. Plus MS is one of the most competitive 4a districts around with Bell, Rock and Knox.

 

Plus they have very little tradition. I think the Elkins days in the early mid 90's was the best the football program has been.

I understand you point. The older I get, the more idealistic I get. Maybe I've watched too many "Gridiron Gang" and "Necessary Roughness" esque movies...I don't know. I've always felt that with the RIGHT guy anything is possible anywhere. Honestly, I think that a place like Southern would not be the match for just a "GOOD COACH." There's probably tons of good coaches in the state. Probably a good amount haven't had success at one spot, but have at others. I think chemistry really comes into play. Whoever Southern gets, needs to find that spark to ignite change. If they find the right fit, I think Southern could be successful, even in that killer district/region. Then that guy will have to build a strong staff of like-minded guys that fill the same niche. All schools are like microcosms...just got to find the right fit for the specific need.

In all honesty, I've not had a good experience with the coach, the players, or the fans at MSHS. But to give a fair evaluation to any coach who may be considering the job, I think it's a sleeper program. They always seem to come up good athletes quickly. This tells me it's there, but someone is going to have to find a way to bring 'em out, install disapline, and break some bad habits of carryover players and parents. I really don't know about administrative support. Bluntly, I was not a fan of their previous coach and from the comments I heard him make he was not a fan of mountain football teams either. Hope this helps someone.

Pepper I think your comments are on point. But a football program gets it cues and behavior from its Head Coach. With the right hire they will be recieved in better terms.

I think you're right. But it's hard to come into a program and change it when it is this far off from what you hope to accomplish.

I do not agree with this, because I have seen it done several times before. It is not easy and it takes alot of hard work, but with the right person in charge it can get done.
