Give the Score for a Change!

This is the first season in 20 years I haven't broadcast football for somebody somewhere, and the first post I've made on this site in a while. I have listened very little this season, but enough to know there are a LOT of rookies behind the mike (and that's putting it nicely), who need to remember a couple of things. You need to continuously update the score, who has the ball, and how much time is left. Everything else is filler. I don't know of many who sit and listen to a game from beginning to end on this level, unless it's deep into the playoffs. I just drove home from dinner with my family, and listened 12 minutes before I got a score on one particular game. The 12 minutes otherwise was filled with dribble that told me nothing about what had happened, only what they hoped would happen. If you don't do anything else right, PLEASE, give these critical pieces of information every four or five downs.

Thank you. This is a big pet peeve of mine. The thing that drives me crazy the most is their never updating the time remaining. :irked:

Amen... And they should tell the names of the schools playing. I was out tonight and flipping through stations covering various games and the radio guys told a score occasionally, but didn't tell who was playing.

Line of Scrimmage AND Down and Distance should be given EVERY SINGLE PLAY!!

The Play-by-Play announcer should give the time and score as often as practical. IT CANNOT BE GIVEN TOO OFTEN. It should be worked into the LOS and Down and Distance info on every few plays. "Lincoln County leads 14-7 with 7:30 to play in the first half. They come to line with a first down and ten at their own 40 yard line."

Also, I am sick of hearing "The score is 14-7". That is worse than no score. Who has what?

Then, you have the announcers who don't need to give the score because you can tell by their demeanor who is winning/losing.:madman:

I agree. When I'm not at a game myself, I'm scanning the dial looking for other games. Unless I know the area and the station I'm listening to, I have no idea who's playing and other critical information such as mentioned above. Wears me out. If you can't give me the teams involved and the score within a couple of minutes, I'm gone looking for a more professional crew.

I started a pet peeve thread a few months ago. Should have added "inept, uninformative game-calling" to my list.

I hate listening to a game where the score is not updated very much at all. Save the private things for anothet time and give me the score.

Of course, I left that out of my original post, as for heaven's sake, that should be a given. If you don't do that anyway, you have no business in the business. Mr Net, you are correct, as I was told those things when I first started. You cannot give the score too much... Basics are a necessity on the field, and behind the mike.

Miss ya calling the games...PBP Man...hope all is well!

I caught a broadcast at the start of the second half a few weeks back of two schools and it was literally 17 mins before they told the score, there were 13 seconds left in the 3rd quarter...

I miss doing the really good games. Of course, the really funny stuff in our broadcast usually started when the game got out of hand, and if I had one issue, it was keeping myself interested in the lopsided affairs. I'm convinced many people tuned in to hear what Paul would say next... Not so sure about Coach Leahy, but who knows, I might wind up doing it again someday soon.

I'm not in radio, but this is a peeve of mine, too. I read an article on Vin Scully several years ago in which he told how he remembers to give the score frequently: He keeps a 3-minute egg timer in the booth, and every time the sand runs out he gives the score. Simple but brilliant.

Best announcers that I have ever heard. Sure do miss you guys.

If only the locals could realize how simple that is!
