November 9, 200718 yr Jimmy Carter: American Revolution Was 'Unnecessary' Recently we described Jimmy Carter as the worst president of the past 100 years. We apologize. He's the worst president ever. In trying to compare the American Revolution to the war in Iraq, here's what the jug-headed Georgian said to fellow Democrat Chris Matthews on "Hardball" Monday night, according to MSNBC's own transcript: 'A Little More Sensitive' Well, one parallel is that the Revolutionary War, more than any other war up until recently, has been the most bloody war we've fought. I think another parallel is that in some ways the Revolutionary War could have been avoided. It was an unnecessary war. Had the British Parliament been a little more sensitive to the colonials' really legitimate complaints and requests the war could have been avoided completely, and of course now we would have been a free country now as is Canada and India and Australia, having gotten our independence in a nonviolent way. I think in many ways the British were very misled in going to war against America and in trying to enforce their will on people who were quite different from them at the time. Does the catastrophic ex-prez really think the war in Iraq is bloodier than the Vietnam War, the Korean War, World War II, World War I, the Civil War ...? Note to Jimmy: Canada did not begin to gain independence until 1867. Australia did not receive partial independence as a commonwealth until 1901. India did not gain independence until 1947, and all the Indians who were killed by the British would hardly describe their deaths as "nonviolent." http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1251143/posts
November 9, 200718 yr This was a joke that made the rounds shortly after Carter left office: Carter died and was soon met in Heaven by another late president, Teddy Roosevelt. "So, tell me how things are with our country" said Roosevelt. "There are some problems", said Carter "For example, the Russians invaded Afghanistan" "Really?" said T.R., "Did you move the fleet in as a show of force?" "Well, no. We boycotted the Olympics" Said Carter. Roosevelt rolled his eyes. "What else?" Now Jimmy was feeling a little uncomfortable."The Iranians stormed our embassy and held our people hostage". "Ahhh, I bet the Marines took care of that in a hurry!" "Well no, we negotiated for 444 days. In fact, they released the hostages on the last day I was in office." Now Roosevelt is miffed. "You, Sir, are the worst president ever. In fact, I couldn't think any worse of you if you had told me you gave away the Panama Canal!"

I think the point is excellent that to England the war was avoidable and unnecessary. To us it was inevitable. They were continuing to exert their imperialist notions on a people who wanted no part of it. It could have been avoided had Britain not been so arrogant. I don't think Carter was meaning that the Revolutionaries should not have rebelled.

I agree with him that it was avoidable if the British had handled it differently.

Most historians agree that the Revolution was a little harder to come up with figures since no established government existed or was prepared to count the dead.
November 10, 200718 yr I try to defend Jimmy Carter, cause lets face it, the man is a great humanitarian. But this comment makes him pretty hard to defend.
November 10, 200718 yr Jimmy Carter is not a smart man and he is not a great humanitarian. The only positive accomplishment that Carter will be remembered for is his role in the Camp David agreement between Egypt and Israel. If Egypt develops nukes in response to Iran's nuclear program, Carter's lone foreign policy triumph will be quickly overshadowed. Carter's incompetence as president and his irresponsible meddling in this nation's foreign relations as a former president is mind boggling. The man obviously has no sense of shame.

Disagree totally with that one and I know there's nothing I can say to change your mind. I'll let his work and involvement speak for itself. As for his other words and "meddling" I tend to agree. I'm not sure you can be so hard on an 83 year old man. Many of the 83 year olds I have known would have said or done something similar to Jimmy in speaking out on things, the difference is they do it at dinner and everytime Jimmy does it it makes TV.

Uh, I beg to differ on that count, too. Carter studied nuclear physics and graduated in the top ten percent of his U.S. Naval Academy class in 1946. You may not agree with some of his policy decisions, but it's tough to make a case that he is not a smart man.
November 10, 200718 yr So his involvement with Habitat for Humanity is not worth anyhthing.Jimmy Carter's generous contributions to the cause of Islamo-fascism more than offsets all of his good deeds. What would a terrorist organization pay to have a former US President bash Israel and American foreign policy? Carter is an invaluable source of anti-American propaganda for terrorists of every stripe.
