November 8, 200718 yr This is the list ESPN come up with. What are the most recent teams you would add in there. I would have to go with the 2006 Texas team for sure. 1. Nebraska (1971) 2. USC (1972) 3. Nebraska (1995) 4. Army (1945) 5. Miami (2001) 6. Michigan (1947) 7. Notre Dame (1947) 8. Oklahoma (1956) 9. Oklahoma (1974) 10. Alabama (1961) Since the big debate is a playoff system, if this gets enough response maybe we can do a BGP All-Time playoff system much like Scribe did with the sports movies in the general discussion?
November 8, 200718 yr Would have been interesting to see where Kentucky would have finished in 1977, if they weren't on probation. Probably would have had a Sugar bowl matchup with Notre Dame. They might have won the title if they had won their Bowl Game.

They might have won the title if they had won their Bowl Game. It took luck for the Irish to win that one in '77. ND went to the Cotton Bowl to play the #1 ranked and undefeated Longhorns. They smashed Texas and poured it on as much as they could to influence voters. Alabama was ranked #3 and the SEC Champ with a 10-1 record. They drubbed Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl 38-6. All was for naught if #2 ranked Oklahoma could just beat Arkansas who was missing 2 big starters on offense. But the Hogs drubbed the Sooners something like 35-6. Notre Dame leap frogged over Alabama to take the title on Jan. 2. I said all that to say that ND would have still gone to the Cotton Bowl and if UK had gone to the Sugar they may have played Alabama because that would have been the best matchup for the Sugar Bowl. (there were no Bowl tie-ins except through Conference Championships in those days) That was the best KY team of my lifetime (none other even close) but there was no scenario for them to win the National Title that year. (In fact Penn State, whom KY beat at PSU, was ranked a spot ahead in the final AP poll)
November 8, 200718 yr If I was going to take a Miami team it would probably have been the '87 squad. They were even better in '86 but lost the National title to PSU. Of all the Alabama teams I don't know I'd take the '61 over the last Bear Champion in '78 and '79 or the Namath teams from '64. Texas has some right to argue. The '69 Horns are often listed as one of the greatest (inventors of the wishbone). I guess it's hard to pare it down to just 10.
November 9, 200718 yr I don't know, who should be added besides the USC team with Bush and Leinart that actually won the championship game. Miami 2001 should have been #1. C'mon, Ed Reed, Clinton Portis, Frank Gore, McGahee(was the 3rd string at the time), Shockey, Andre Johnson, Antrel Rolle, Ken Dorsey (great COLLEGE qb and Maxwell award winner), DJ Williams, Sean Taylor, Kelly Jennings, Phillip Buchanon, Najah Davenport, Jonathan Vilma, Vince Wilfork, Roscoe Parrish, William Joseph, Mike Rumph, Jerome McDougle, William Joseph, Eric Winston, Vernon Carey, and Bryant McKinnie (the Outland trophy winner). Talent has never been assembled like that before. C'mon they had one close game AT Virginia Tech, in which they won 26-24. The next closest games where a 18-7 win at Boston College and a 22 point win over FSU. They won the National Championship 37-14, in a game that really wasn't even that close.
November 9, 200718 yr Athletes are so much bigger, stronger, and faster in the present-day that I would go so far as to say that a sub-par I-A team is better than the 1945 Army team. By the way, Army is just the example I chose. Take any national title team in the 40s, 50s, and 60s and apply the same logic.
November 9, 200718 yr I agree. what would a 40's or 50's team do to match up with 6-4 recievers that run 4.4's and Lb's who can cover side to side? Also, old school power would get smashed, and the wide open spread offenses would be too much.
November 9, 200718 yr 95 Huskers got hosed. They are without a doubt the best team of all time. I think their closest game that year was 14 points and they beat 3 or 4 top ten teams that year on their way to the title. Look for highlights of the 96 Fiesta bowl if you forgot how good they were.
November 9, 200718 yr Hard to argue against the '95 NU squad, they crushed all comers. Still remember Spurrier lining up on his own 1 yd line, 5 wide and NU forced the safety. By the way, Army is just the example I chose. Take any national title team in the 40s, 50s, and 60s and apply the same logic. I don't think it's fair to compare eras. Sure they're undersized, but it would have never even crossed their minds to weight train, work out or drink protein shakes. Think Babe Ruth would hit all those home runs today? Of course not; constantly smoking cigars and eating all that food without working out would keep him from staying in the minors, to say nothing of the Yankees. For that reason, I'd throw on some of Fielding Yost's "point-a-minute" Michigan teams from 1901-1904. Their offense was so strong and their defense so good that they would often punt on first down, in full confidence that the other team would never score on them. From 1901-1905, the Wolverines outscored their opponents 2,821 to 42. They were undefeated for 56 straight games before losing to Chicago at the end of the 1905 season (with the only tie coming in a game against Minnesota; that game was the reason the Little Brown Jug was established). For my money, I like '95 Nebraska or '45 Army as the No. 1.
