I think 01 Miami has to be on this list, a ton of NFL players was on that roster.

If I was going to take a Miami team it would probably have been the '87 squad. They were even better in '86 but lost the National title to PSU.

 

 

Of all the Alabama teams I don't know I'd take the '61 over the last Bear Champion in '78 and '79 or the Namath teams from '64.

 

Texas has some right to argue. The '69 Horns are often listed as one of the greatest (inventors of the wishbone).

 

 

I guess it's hard to pare it down to just 10.

Hard to argue against the '95 NU squad, they crushed all comers. Still remember Spurrier lining up on his own 1 yd line, 5 wide and NU forced the safety.

The '69 Texas team was the first one I noticed in my childhood. To say I look at them with those lenses is probably accurate. However the Sporting News wrote a book about 15 years ago or so entitled Top 25 College Teams of all Time. They listed the Horns #6 so that would show I don't just see things with a burnt orange hue.

 

Alabama in '78 and '79 I remember well. They had a solid Defense with numerous NFL stars and players. They ran a deep wishbone that ran numerous backs in and out. Went 10-1 in '78 and 11-0 in '79.

 

If your curious that Sporting News ranking had them in their Top Ten.

 

I followed College Football religiously from the mid 70's on and I thought those Miami teams of '87, '86 were pretty good. They kept Oklahoma from being National Champs in both years. Michael Irvin, Vinny Testerverde, Alonzo Highsmith, Bennie Blades, Jerome Brown, et al. Pretty awesome lineup.

I don't think it's fair to compare eras. Sure they're undersized, but it would have never even crossed their minds to weight train, work out or drink protein shakes. Think Babe Ruth would hit all those home runs today? Of course not; constantly smoking cigars and eating all that food without working out would keep him from staying in the minors, to say nothing of the Yankees.

 

For that reason, I'd throw on some of Fielding Yost's "point-a-minute" Michigan teams from 1901-1904. Their offense was so strong and their defense so good that they would often punt on first down, in full confidence that the other team would never score on them. From 1901-1905, the Wolverines outscored their opponents 2,821 to 42. They were undefeated for 56 straight games before losing to Chicago at the end of the 1905 season (with the only tie coming in a game against Minnesota; that game was the reason the Little Brown Jug was established).

 

For my money, I like '95 Nebraska or '45 Army as the No. 1.

 

I know what you are saying, but if you say "Best College Football Team of All-Time" you are forced to compare eras.

Going with the thread title, I'll fell safe in saying '95 Nebraska is the best college football team I've seen. I really dislike admitting that, but the knock on them all year was "what will happen when they get down a score or two?" or "they don't play in a tough division".

 

Well, they beat all-comers and the SEC Champs, and not one game was close. That's good enough for me.

95 Huskers got hosed. They are without a doubt the best team of all time. I think their closest game that year was 14 points and they beat 3 or 4 top ten teams that year on their way to the title. Look for highlights of the 96 Fiesta bowl if you forgot how good they were.
