That Nebraska team would probably have rolled over top any team in the country on that day. There was no question from the opening whistle who was going to win that game.

 

It was an impressive win against a very, very strong opponent. Like I said, when I look at the seasons as a whole and then look at the fact that Nebraska demolished a superior opponent in their bowl game, while Michigan barely beat Washington State, I think Nebraska was clearly the best team in college football when the dust cleared. Michigan may have been better when the season kicked off...who knows, but they weren't better than Nebraska when bowl season rolled around.

 

You're all entitled to your own opinion and I have no problem with that, but there is nothing you can tell me that's going to change the way I feel about these two teams...this is the same thing I thought in January of 1998 and it hasn't changed...short of telling me that these two teams actually played and Michigan did, in fact, beat them, you can save your attempts at persuading me to see it another way.

Im pretty biased when it comes to this topic but I think the bowl game speaks volumes. To bad the BCS came 1 year to late.

Is that really relevant? The reason the BCS came about and the reason nearly everyone wants a playoff or plus one system is because the polls are flawed. That's a weak argument, and unfortunately, one of the few Michigan has in their favor...in fact, it's the only one that's been offered in this thread. Notre Dame beat Florida State head-to-head and yet the pollsters voted FSU above them when it came time to decide a champion.

Yes, the Coaches poll voted Nebraksa, the AP poll voted Michigan.

I would have picked Nebraska in this one. I think it would have been one heck of a National Championship Game.

What's relevant is that every single pollster thought Michigan was the best team riiiiight up to the point Osborne announced his retirement. What's relevant is that I don't think the coaches up and decided that Nebraska was in fact better, I think they decided to send out Osborne with a bang. I'm not Michigan fan, wasn't then, not now, and that's how I've always felt.

 

For those who argue that the Nebraska/Tennesee game compared to the Michigan/Washington State game proves that Nebraska was the better team, what do they have to say about their fluke win over Missouri (and make no mistake, it was a fluke)? What do they have to say about their three point win over 5-6 Colorado?
