Need help, question about returning a vehicle just bought:

Featured Replies

Can anybody out there in Bluegrass land answer a question for me? My wife and I bought a new vehicle -- we had some family issues come out of nowhere on us. Contacted the dealer about returning the vehicle -- this was on within 24 hours -- was told we could not return the vehicle. Can anybody shed some light on our rights in this matter?

Really? My brother-in-law told me you have 3 days but when I called the dealer they told me no. Guess I'm stuck with it -- unless someone wants to but a new SUV.:thumb:

I thought you had 3 day's to return a new car.

I'm quite sure you've bought a car.

I would contact the Attorney General in your state.

Who was the dealer?

I think you have 3 days. Can you prove that you called the dealer?

A brand new car should be able to be returned within 3 days's in KY.

There is a lemon law in the state of Kentucky that allows you to bring A NEW CAR back to the dealer within a certain amount of time or under a certain mileage if the car ends up having quite a few problems in that period of time. In your case, if you bought it, then decided you didn't want it then I believe it is at the dealer discretion if you can return the car. With some dealers, you can return a car you purchased within 72 hours, but most dealers don't do that.

I learned this the hard way. My wife and I purchased Land Rover from a car lot in Nicholasville and when I drove it home, the ABS light, the Downhill Decent Control, and the Check Engine light came on. I took the SUV to the Land Rover dealer in Lexington on Monday and I learned there was $5000 worth of work that needed to be done....especially the brakes, they were about to go out. According to the Land Rover dealer, the car lot who I bought the Rover from had reset all those warning lights some how. Well, to make a long story short, I attempted to return the Land Rover to the car lot, printout of everything wrong in hand and I was basically told that if I didn't get the Land Rover off their lot, they would have it towed to my house. Nice people, huh? I was actually talking to the guy who sold me the Land Rover and another salesman was standing behind him talking crap to me. I had to actually call the sheriff.

PM me if you want to know who the dealer is.

So, what ultimately happened? Sounds like a fradulent sale.

There is NO state law in Kentucky that provides for a "cooling-off period" for a car sale. Three day cooling off periods are often offered by the dealer, but is not obligatory. As someone else said, once you purchase or lease a vehicle, you are obligated to pay, unless the dealer stipulates otherwise.

Not to mention the Sales guy probably wont return your calls and when you bring it back he will be out to lunch. I hope you get it worked out, those types of purchases are major in most people's life so you would think the dealer would understand.

Or you can just threaten with bad publicity and they will gladly take it back I am sure. You hate to do it but if you say you are going to start telling others the story and give the dealership not necessarily a bad name but a non-sympathetic label they may be willing to work with you. I know they are in business and if every dealership took back a car when a buyer had remorse they wouldnt be in business but this may work.

I know a guy who had a Mazda truck and major things went wrong 500 miles past warranty, he was a Mazda guy. Owned several over 15 yrs and when they denied his request to cover it under warranty, he put a big sign in the back of his truck that said "Do not buy Mazda products" I think it went on for maybe 2 weeks and they called him and said when can we pencil you in to get the work done for free. : )

So, what ultimately happened? Sounds like a fradulent sale.

After threatening to voice our displeasure over getting sold an unsafe vehicle to anybody that would listen we were offered the option of getting another vehicle in the same price range. They did offer to fix the Land Rover, I didn't trust that their guys would fix it. So, we looked around on the lot for something we liked and took it to our mechanic and had him do a once over to it. We would have done that the first time, but our mechanic wasn't open on Saturday and we had actually bought a vehicle from our same salesman in the past and didn't have any trouble. I will never buy a car from that place again and I urge anybody on here that lives in the Nicholasville/Lexington area to do the same. PM me if you want to know who I am talking about.
