November 1, 200718 yr Benching is overrated, and probably the exercise with the most risk for shoulder injury. I quit doing it after getting 315 and not being able to sleep on my left shoulder for two months. Besides that reason, you can a better overall workout doing dumbells. What you don't have is an answer for the question "How much do you bench?", which is the first thing people say when they know you lift regularly. Lately I've enjoyed telling them 120 lbs. But I don't even bother mentioning that I'm talking about dumbells. I mix in a dumbbell workout quite a bit, but I don't feel like it is as good of a workout for me.
November 1, 200718 yr I mix in a dumbbell workout quite a bit, but I don't feel like it is as good of a workout for me. Truthfully, a person should do what's best for them. I don't know why or how but dumbells have always been the best route for me when it comes to gaining the size, strength, and stamina I'm shooting for out of a chest workout. And I always thought it was weird that guys in the gym stronger than me on barbell bench couldn't do near as much on dumbells as me. I hope no one thinks I'm bragging because if anything I am really curious about my own weakness on the barbell bench. After giving it a lot of thought, I think it has to do with the way people are made. For example, I'm narrow through the shoulders and long armed for my height. I think that is why I am more prone to shoulder injury while benching than say a guy who is broad-shouldered and short-armed. Who knows though??
November 1, 200718 yr I almost forgot...gym myth where I workout is that dumbells help build the stabilizer muscles in the shoulder more so than barbell bench. So hopefully I am helping myself in that regard.
November 1, 200718 yr My son needs to gain "upper body" strength. (6'3 / 235) plays OT...JR. What is the best work out to attain this? Barbells do a great job on biceps...what about Pecs? And is it possible to gain 20-30 LB of muscle in the off-season...safely? He's 16 yr. old. Help...I was a weight-room refugee in HS! Long arms w/long-lean frame
November 2, 200718 yr Author I have only went up to 100 pounds as far as d-ball bench press goes. I usually do 10 on my first set and then as many as I can on the next two.

Long arms w/long-lean frame Lifting weights for football, and lifting weights for "looks" are two completely different types of lifting. Strength training involves a lot of things your son probably wouldn't see as beneficial to increasing Chest, Shoulder, and Arm size because it involves a lot of leg lifts. Doing squats, deadlifts, leg press, weighted lunges, etc., help increase the body's bloodflow and natural testerone. So working out the legs is vital to gaining full body strength. The Clean and Press is another lift that is great for football players, as are Bucktwists. These incorporate the muscles in the entire torso, as well as pegs, and are used in just about every football weight-lifting program. Finally, it isn't possible to gain 20-30 pounds of muscle in the off-season unless your son is naturally growing at a rapid pace, too. But he could safely by using protein and other weight-lifting supplements as long as the effort in the weightroom backs up the dollars spent at GNC.
November 2, 200718 yr No problem.:thumb: BTW...You can easily find strength training workouts on the web if you wanted to search for some.

November 2, 200718 yr I am not saying this to be smart, but beyond athletics, what is the point of trying to bench an Oldsmobile? I encourage everyone to work out their most important muscle before trying to look like Schwartzanegger... that being their heart. Lifting weights does help the heart...
November 2, 200718 yr Author Maybe next week I will try doing the D-Bell bench at the gym. I did see where they have some that are bigger than the 100 pound ones I was using before.

I hit the weights today and had for me a great ok a good workout. 225 for 30 reps(A NEW HIGH) 225 FOR 25 225 FOR 22 225 FOR 21 When your working out that hard for a while sometimes a little rest will give you a nice boost. By the way thats sick how many reps you can do. You would be a monster on this at the NFL combine.
November 12, 200718 yr Author NHS BIG DADDY, 30 Is the best I have done with 225 so far but, I am going to start really hitting them, the weights a lot harder after the state finals in football are over. My hope is to get 40 by spring. I hope to get back to doing cardio tomorrow which is something I was just getting back into before I got sick. Anything else that I get done in the gym will be fat free icing on the cake so to speak.
