I'm not sure the economics are right here. Wages may rise in some sectors that absolutely have to have low skilled workers, but what we would really see is a cutback in jobs, slower growth, and most probably higher prices. That certainly wouldn't eliminate poverty.

 

Not sure I follow that. If a construction company can pay workers $6.00 per hour and get several and then that option is no longer available to them, you are saying they will just not build as many houses instead of hiring Americans at $10 per hour?

 

While I understand that the number of homes will be lower, I don't think they go back to zero and not hire workers to replace what they need. I do agree that the economy will drop slightly because of the lower cost of wages, but do think you would see a rise in the standard of living in those that are actively seeking a job and wanting to work but that are not willing to work at $6 per hour with no benefits as the illegal immigrants are.

I think what we will see is less profit going into the pockets of those employers willing to hire illegals.

"Enforce the laws we have now" is easier said than done. Enforcing the laws we have now requires resources that have not been allocated . Our country lacks adequate numbers of border patrol agents, border fencing/wall, border surveillance infrastructure, more effective legal mechanisms and systems to police employer compliance, and on and on. Getting appropriations for such resources requires Congressional actions. Good luck getting things through Congress if you're not willing to compromise.

If your basement is flooded, you repair the leak before you waste time shopping for a new pump. Passing an amnesty bill without having adequate border security and enforcement of our current laws would have been a recipe for disaster. "Amnesty bill" was a much more accurate description of the legislation that our elected representatives tried to sneak through Congress than "guest worker program" was. Congress and the President wrongly assumed that the American people were too ignorant to notice the misnamed bill before it could become law.

 

Enforcing current law does not mean that every single illegal alien has to be rounded up immediately and sent back home. We can start with those who are apprehended committing additional crimes. The roundup costs for those felons would be minimal, but it does no good to deport when we cannot make the deporation permanent.

 

I think that an amnesty program will have widespread support if the federal government first cuts off the flood of illegals. We need the labor of immigrants and they need the jobs, but let's get them off on the right foot by providing some strong incentives to stop breaking our laws.

I think there is a legitimate concern that many Mexicans both in the US and Mexico would like to see the southwest returned to Mexico. Especially California.

Why so much hatred for "Mexicans"?? They are making $0.50 at best an hour with marginal health care, resources, facilities, etc. Wouldnt you steal to feed your starving family?? Why not go to another country illegally to save them??
