October 24, 200718 yr I received this today an thought it was interesting. Bank of America, can I help you? Customer: Yes, I want to cancel my account. I don't want to do business with you any longer. The Bank: Why? Customer: You're giving credit to illegal immigrants and I don't think it's right. I'm taking my business elsewhere.. The Bank: Well, Mr. Customer, we don't want to see you do that, but we can't stop you. I'll help you close the account. What is your account number? Customer: (gives account number) The Bank: For security purposes and for your protection, can you please give me the last four digits of your social security nu mber? Customer: No. The Bank: Mr. Customer, I need to verify your information, but in order to help you, I'll need verification of who you are. Customer: Why should I give you my social security number? The reason I'm closing my account is that your bank is issuing credit cards to illegal immigrants who don't have social security numbers. You are targeting that audience and want their business. Let's say I'm an illegal immigrant and you've given me a credit card. I have a question about it and call for assistance. You wouldn't be asking me for a Social Security number, would you? The Bank: No sir, I wouldn't. Customer: Why not? The Bank: Because you would have pressed '2' to speak in Spanish. We don't ask for that information when calling in on the Spanish line. October 24, 200718 yr Close the borders. Cut off ALL funding to illegals. Let law enforcement routinely check the status of all persons arrested for any crime and deport those that are illegal. Prosecute employers that hire illegals. Now what do you think should be done, continue the status quo because they are just here looking for a better life?
October 24, 200718 yr Author Local Law Enforcement official told me that INS will almost never react when an illegal is arrested locally.

BTW, I proposed this question on the other thread and no one answered. How do we pay for stopping the problem of illegal immigration?

I thought the immigration reform bill that was before Congress a few months ago should have been passed. But it was ignorantly labeled an "amnesty" bill and as a result nothing will happen. People can whine and complain about nothing ever getting done or they can recognize that the other side has their heels dug in just as firmly and decide to come to an agreement through compromise. If there is no willingness to compromise, the status quo will win out every time.

If we don't bother to enforce the laws we have now, how could we ever hope to enforce the ridiculous amnesty bill pushed by GWB, McCain and Kennedy? It would soon turn into an everybody gets in free bill.

Our country lacks adequate numbers of border patrol agents, border fencing/wall, border surveillance infrastructure, more effective legal mechanisms and systems to police employer compliance, and on and on. Getting appropriations for such resources requires Congressional actions. Good luck getting things through Congress if you're not willing to compromise.

No, WE LACK THE POLITICAL WILL, to enforce the laws.
October 24, 200718 yr How much money is added to the economy as a result of the work that illegals do? Some are "illegally" paying into Social Security and will never draw that money down - what is the positive impact of that. We don't have 8 million citizens unemployed in the US - if we send 12 million home who are going to fill those jobs?

We don't have 8 million citizens unemployed in the US - if we send 12 million home who are going to fill those jobs? When they get amnesty in, something will be proposed by some Congressperson that will allow them to draw upon the time they were working and yet illegal immigrants. I definitely see that happening from someone wanting to appeal to the Hispanic voters. As far as your last point, one thing would happen, wages would go up because there is less unskilled labor in the market and the businesses would be competing for workers. Simple supply and demand. Low supply, high demand means wages go up. And those that are living in poverty would be lessen because of wages going up. So the illegal immigration adds to the problem of poverty that we both are concerned about.
October 24, 200718 yr Research has shown a correlation between the economy and illegal immigration. Illegal immigration rises to its peak levels when industries within the United States are in need of low skilled workers and seems to subside, yet continues, when these same industries don’t require as many workers. While that makes sense, the scary part is the tremendous amount of lobbying that takes place to ensure that these large influxes of illegal immigrants are able to cross the border. Despite the higher number of immigrants coming illegally, border patrols and tactics are pared back, resulting in a disproportionately lower number of enforcements than times when American industries do not require low skill workers. With that said, closing the border entirely is not only unachievable but uneconomical. Of course we should secure our border with whatever means necessary (a wall, more agents, technology, etc.) but it can only succeed in conjunction with a streamlined immigration system, where we allow in these immigrants who wish to work. This will not only allow us to keep track of them, but make deportation effective as they will not be able to simply re-cross the border. This will, of course, require the cooperation of both the United States and Mexico, and it appears neither country is interested in doing this as evidenced by the debacle that is our border.

So the illegal immigration adds to the problem of poverty that we both are concerned about. I'm not sure the economics are right here. Wages may rise in some sectors that absolutely have to have low skilled workers, but what we would really see is a cutback in jobs, slower growth, and most probably higher prices. That certainly wouldn't eliminate poverty.
