I expected Belfry to win this game. But not by that many points.

 

Did the May kid from Belfry play?

Yes. 133 yards and a couple td's I beleive. Not many carries to pick that up either.

 

Belfry played a very good second half.

Started out a lil slow, but picked up well in the 2nd half.... Glad to see everyone back....Pirates rolled on to 8-0. So far so good... Number 1 in the district... Can't wait till week 10... Should be a barn burner... GO PIRATES!!!!:fight::fight: Congrats to Coach Haywood on # 300...

I kind of expected a closer game.. but we'll take it anyway we get it... SC has a good team.. Any updates on the SC player who got hurt?? Hope he is ok... Congrats to SC on a hard fought game... WTG PIRATES!!!

Congrats Pirates on a big win. This game had me worried all week and the outcome really surprises me. I thought it would be a little bit closer. A big congratulations goes out to Coach Haywood on his 300th win and also a big Thank You for being just as good a person as he is a coach. When you think Belfry football you will always think Coach Haywood.

The Cards looked like a team on a mission in the first half and they were able to get Dials the ball several times 1 on 1 on the outside where he can maneuver and slip tackles for big gains. He had two really nice gains in the first half and led SC to their only score.

 

Belfry defense made a big defensive stand to turn back SC in the red zone late in teh 2nd quarter with a 14-7 lead, and that was a big, big key. The Pirates took the ball down the field and was knocking on the door but threw an interception on about the 10 yard line with 30 seconds or so to go in the half. That drive didn't end with points, and they went in with a 14-7 lead, but I think they learned something on that drive that helped them the rest of the way.

 

The half time adjustments by Belfry's D were apparent immediately after the 3rd Qtr kickoff and they held the Card offense in check the rest of the way. Dials couldn't get free on the ground and once SC switched to the passing game, it was over.

 

Belfry really wore down the SC line in the 2nd half. SC looked really tired late and Belfry opened up some big holes for May, Lee and Co.

 

Congratulations to Coach Haywood on #300, although I know he couldn't care less about such an individual milestone. He would be the first to credit his players, his coaches, fan support and anybody else who contributed to his record before he would even think about taking any credit. Hard not to be around this man and not be affected in a positive way. Thanks for the last 24 years Coach, hope you enjoy winning #300 in some personal way.

Here we go:

 

1st half:

Belfry came out very flat, whereas SC came out very pumped up. Belfry's first drive eventually materialized into a TD by Thomas Varney off the option pitch, but it set a trend that belfry was not so happy with. the Pirates shot themselves in the foot with a penalty and nearly killed the drive. SC answered with a HB Reverse Pass by Dials on their first play which put the ball iN belfry territory before the Pirate D stepped up and forced SC to turn it over on downs.

 

Belfry's second posession didn't yield any points, but they were able to pin SC inside the 10 on a Varney punt. Dials would then break a long run to put Belfry in Pirate territory as the 1st Quarter came to a close. The drive would continue with numerous missed tackles before Dials would eventually punch it in to tie the game at 7-7. Belfry would answer with an excellent drive using their power backfield (Dotson at FB, Lee and May at HB) to move the score to 14-7. SC would put together another sound drive to get deep in pirate territory ebfore the Pirates came up huge again on 4th down to force a turnover with about 4 minutes remaining. The Pirates would drive down the field and into field goal range (despite several penalties), but with about 45 second remaining and two timeouts, the Pirates would go to the air and Elkins would be picked off for the first time this season, setting the halftime score at 14-7.

 

Dials had 123 rushing yards in the first half, and it appeared as if it was going to be a tight game with SC receiving the 2nd half kick.

2nd Half

Belfry took over from the word go... the Pirates would tattoo the Cardinal returner on the opening kick, and then force an immediate 3 and out. Thomas Varney would return the ensuing punt for a T, but a block in the back (very close call as Lee appeared to hit the guy as his head turned to the play) negated that play. From that point, it was GAME OVER. Belfry would not be stopped in the second half running the ball down the Cards throat time after time. The defense would play huge as well, limtiing Dials to a mere 25 yards in the second half, and staggering the SC passing game with numerous sacks and pressures. The key play in the game came with belfry holding the 21-7 lead, on 4th and 5 from their own 40 yard lien SC would go for it and be stopped. Immediaely afterwards May would break lose for a long TD run to demoralize what hopes SC had. Belfry starters FINALLY saw 4th Quarter action, but were all pulled at about the 5 minute mark.

 

The Belfryt eam from the first half cannot win the State Title.

The second half Pirates will be VERY tough to stop, VERY!

Sounded like Belfry's front 7 decided to get nasty in the second half.

 

Way to go PIRATES!

May was a mule tonight, running over numerous Cardinals and breaking tackle after tackle. He also made numerous big hits on defense.

 

SC really seemed to put an emphasis on stopping Lee, but Haywood did an excellent job of recognizing this and utilizing Elkins running ability on the QB sweep. Elkins made some nice passes, and Adam Bowens contineus to look like an All-State candidate on both sides of the ball (For Russell fans, he will remind you of #30 Aaron Chapman from the 2005 team).

 

Belfry's pass defense was impeccable tonight. Aside from that HB Reverse Pass, they had superb coverage all night resulting in coverage sacks, they made SC a very one dimensional team. SOPH Thomas Varney is quickly becoming a star for all the things he can do (Rushing, Receiving, Returning, Coverage, Tackling).

 

Belfry's line sturggled in the first half, they dominated in the second.

Lots of small things that have to be corrected though.

I didn't think they were flat, EKU. SC was pumped up and Belfry had to make some adjustments and wear them down. This Pirate team will be very hard to beat in a 4 quarter game by any 3A school. But they are not perfect and if anyone comes to a high school game expecting a perfect game, they will be disappointed. Looking at the whole game, I was pleased with the effort and the result tonight.

 

Of course, fans are not always fair or level headed. I heard lots of fans near me criticizing Coach Haywood last week at Pike Central. Even when the long snapper sent the snap over the head of the punter, one guy loudly blamed Coach Haywood, as if he had anything to do with it.

He's a coach who'll credit the players first? Sounds like a couple of great coaches I've known in these parts! But I told them that it takes a great coach still to show them how to win! Maybe some day I'll have the huge honor of meeting him and seeing a Pirate game with you!
