GRC has two middle schools Clark Middle and Conkwright.

Montgomery Co. High (1250 kids) has only one feeder program - McNabb Middle School.

I think it is a terrible disadvantage (athletically) for a school this big to only have one feeder program.... as 2 middle schools = 10 starters coming to the frosh program.

Just wondering what other situations are...

 

Must be a pretty big middle school to feed a rather large high school. I think the issue would be to field multiple teams, as many middle/elementary schools do. The more kids playing at that level, means the more available to develop into good high school contributors. My kid's school (appx. 75 per class coed) fielded four seventh and four eighth grade boy's teams, and 2-3 girl's teams per grade. Several kids from the so-called "B" teams went on to fine HS careers, while some "A" team kids never made the frosh team.

Many Ashlanders say that the consolidation into only one middle school has hurt the basketball program as well.

 

Parents are always free to form AAU, YBO and other teams to get kids experience regardless of what school team they play on. There are tons of tourneys available virtually year-round for middle school age kids as well and no school affiliation is needed!!

But also pull from the 2 Catholic grade schools in town.

 

When talking about athletics, I dont think they get too many of the great athletes from the Catholic grade schools. Maybe you can name a few in the past that came to HHS in the 9th from ST. Thomas or St. Cath. Those boys have NCC usually branded on their hineys. sp?

I agree, and there is a whole other issue that could be expounded upon with regards to schools encouraging AAU participation and those that don't. I was only stating an observation.

I recall a pretty good one, QB if memory serves, from St. Pius a few years back; and his favorite target was I believe from St. Thomas or St. Phillip!! They were pretty fair in hoops as well as I recall.

That was over 7 yrs ago, since then I cant recall any. Seriously, there are a couple out there right now I am hoping choose to be Birds but most are branded by the horseshoe. Most of the kids in jr. high right now that are quality athletes have older brothers playing at NCC so it makes it tough. You never know though.

CovCath has a whole bunch- St. Agnes, St. Pius, Blessed Sacrament, St. Joe's. I think some of the Covington schools (including Prince of Peace, some others) are technically feeders as well, but no one goes to CovCath from there. They also usually get one or two former starters from the likes of St. Paul and St. Henry.

When it comes to Cov Cath, they can draw from anywhere. If you are a top player in your class in the 7th or 8th grade and you want to play for a winner then you pretty much go where you want to go. Especially if the kids are going to Catholic grade/middle schools.

True. However, isn't this true for most public schools other than Boone County Schools?

Simon Kenton has Twenhofel and a portion of Summit View,which feeds Dixie and Scott also.

Raceland doesn't even have a middle school. 7th and 8th graders attend class in the high school.
