St. X, Trinity recruiting alleged: Southern Indiana schools complaining

St. X, Trinity recruiting alleged

Some Southern Indiana school administrators say Louisville high school football powerhouses are recruiting Clark County middle school athletes, and they want it stopped.

Tony Bennett, the Greater Clark County Schools superintendent, said he is sending a protest letter today to St. Xavier and Trinity, as well as the high school athletic associations in both states.

The sooner we all realize that this is a free society we live in which enables all of us to make choices, the better off we will all be. The choice a parent makes to send a child to a partiular high school is a fundamental freedom we all have in the US. People need to wake up and understand that there is more to a private education than kids playing sports. And by the way, that private education is not free, your tax money does not support private education. All of our tax money pays for public education. I see nothing wrong with a representiative of a private school talking to a prospective student and congratulating him on his/her academic and athletic accomplishments. If the school is discussed or introduced, so what. Should parents who have intentions of sending their kids to private schools turn off the radio / TV when JCPS has an advertisment? NO, they are free to "recruit" students just like anybody else. I get the feeling that people think that their are illegal handshakes going on..... All I can say is it is best to have evidence and proof than to go around spouting off unsubstainiated claims of illegal recruiting.

To understand the nature of the complaint, one needs to look at what the root of the claim focuses on, sports. If the complaint dealt with the private schools "taking" all the gifted students and thus producing more than its fair share of National Merit Students and leaving very few for the public system (on an equal numbers basis) then we would really know the "public" push would have the students best interest at heart.....

NO!!! Athletic recruiting is against the rules. If kids are targeted because of their athletic ability it is clearly against the rules. The school and the KHSAA need to drop a bomb on anyone they catch.

TA - Question. When T has an Open House, which many if not all private school do, do you consider this "recruiting"???? BTW - JCPS is holding a "recruiting" get toghether today in downtown Louisville.

I have absolutely no problem with recruiting students. I encourage it, I've worked at Trinity's open house. I like the idea of schools competing to attract students. Athletic recruiting is against the rules. That makes it wrong. Let's be clear. Allegations such as the ones presented against St X in the article do not constitute proof. But if it is true, they need to unload on the individual and if the school is involved in any way - including looking the other way, they need to unload on the school. I'd feel the same way if it was Trinity. The mission of Trinity is a lot more important to me than a football team. The football team needs to support the mission, not the other way around. I have talked to people in power at Trinity. I don't believe they condone or tolerate illegal recruiting. I don't know anyone at X, but I hope they feel the same way.

These allegations, if true, bother me on a lot of levels. First it tends to tar all private schools with the same brush. Second, it provides ammunition to those that wish to separate the private schools. Athletics are important to the students involved and they are also important to the long term survival of private schools. Look around the country. The success and growth of the Louisville Catholic schools is not the case in a lot of the country. There are a lot of reasons, but don't kid yourself, athletics are part of it. Cheating, in addition to sending a message that is absolutely against everything we teach, also puts the long term survival of the schools we love, as large schools, in jeopardy .

Good to understand that you do believe that schools recruit students. Because they all do....... WRT the Athletic recruiting, I agree 100%. No where in my previous message did I say that athletic recruiting is acceptable. Any and all offenders must be delt with on a just basis, no question. I think a lot of it comes down to what is defined as "recruiting"...

I think that the actions described in the article, if true, are clearly athletic recruiting. Your first post seemed to me to be defending the actions described in the article.

Let's not overreact. This could well amount to much ado about nothing. If every school were punished that has "representatives" trying to "attract" kids from other schools, the KHSAA staff would not have time for a restroom break. And, the proportion of government schools to private schools doing it is at least equal to the ratio of government schools to private schools in Kentucky.

Are there any Catholic or other legitimate private high schools in Clark County, Indiana? I don't believe so. That should be mentioned.

I always thought you should go to the school in the same state that you live.

I read the article and was surprised that a "St X person" said he was a coach and was wearing St X apparel. This tells us he thought he was doing nothing wrong and its OK to talk to these kids in another state.

I have more thoughts but will keep them in house.

The father of the student named in the article works for the local Indiana school public school system as a teacher, if I remember correctly. As such, surely he had/has access to all kinds of information, personal observation, and advice relative to what he feels is the best educational avenue for his child. One would hope and assume that he would not be unduly influenced to have his child attend one school over another against the child's best interests. If I were the father, I might tend to be a little insulted by those who may criticize this choice since I'm sure he has done what is in his boy's best interests. It is the boy's family's choice to make, not the choice of those who criticize and patronize.

No offense to anyone but I can hardly believe that a X (or T for that matter) coach would go to a game, wearing all the gear, saying they are a coach...really don't think they are that stupid!!!

Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville is a very fine school. In looking at these situations it should never be about the decision made by an individual family. They should be free to do whatever they believe is in the best interests of their family. In my opinion, the actions described in the article, if true, would be illegal recruiting. That is what should be the focus of the schools and the KHSAA.

I sure hope you are right. If this turns out to be some rabid fan I hope that the powers will let them know just how much damage they could cause.

First, just because a person says he is a St. X coach and wearing St. X apparel does not make it true. And for the record if it is true and it is proven then the hammer needs to be dropped hard on him and the school if they knew. And like TA I would feel the same way if it was Trinity.

Second, could it be that the powers that be in Clark County have their collective panties in a bunch because one of their teachers CHOSE to send his son to a private school in Louisville rather then keeping him in the public school system that employees his father? That in itself makes a pretty big statement as far as I'm concerned.

Third, what credentials does Robbie Valentine have to hold such a position? Has any person every gotten more mileage from being a bench warmer on a national championship basketball team?
