When you see a football referee look over at the down marker and guage where he should place the ball after a 4th and inches play or the officials call a roughing the passing penalty on the defense when the QB rolls out and runs the football and gets tackled then those turkeys are fair game!:fire:

No it wouldn't. Every adult involved in youth sports should be trying to act like a role model. That includes the fans.

How often does your boss tell you what a great job you are doing? My guess is not often. But when you mess up, I'm sure your superior's let you know.

 

Perhaps I just have a very good job, but my boss compliments me more then he points out my errors.

 

I have, on several occasions told a crew as they walk off the field that they called a good game, some of the officials I knew, some I did not. They normally act surprised and very thinkful for my comments. I like to watched a well called game, just as much as I do a well played game. When the game is a well played game, with a very good officiating crew, the game is much more fun to watch.

 

With that said, I have seen unqualified officials calling games that are not ready for varsity games. I do get upset when this happens. This does not happen very often, but does happen, and should not ever happen.

Refs can't be thin skinned. If you can't take the name calling, then hang up the stripes, zebra.

 

Please don't put words in my posts. Answer in your own text area, but it makes it look like I made some of those comments you put in read, and I didn't.

 

1. How do you KNOW a ref is cheating? Can you see in his mind/heart. Also, you begin to paint too many refs in with the same brush of a very small group of officials who might. If you KNOW they are cheating, then report it, and be done with it.

 

2. You commented about keeping it civil which I agree with. However, how is 'calling a spade a spade' and calling out a ref you believe is cheating civil?

 

3. I agree that officials cannot be thin skinned. My question was how much abuse should they take before they should respond. Surely, you don't think that they should take anything said to them do you?

 

I think we lose too many good officials due to the abuse and lack of respect they get. It is a hard job, not worth the money (unless you are officiating at the pro level), and you have to have a love for the game to stay out there and put up with some of the garbage.

They're not any more worse than I've seen in other gyms. Just ask Mr. Chamberlin from Maysville about his experiences coming over here.

I have had more than one official tell me that they would not return to Carlisle. One guy had his whistle ripped off his neck (the type that was attached to the zipper on the shirt) by a fan.

Okay, so can I show up on the golf course and yell out you about being a stupid loser when you miss the 3 foot par putt?

 

How about yelling at you that you are know-nothing hack when the engine that you have been tinkering with doesn't start?

 

Or how about telling you that you are horrible when your cross stitching pillow doesn't come out the way you like it?

 

BTW, without them performing their "hobby" your kids have no place to play.

 

:thumb:Sorry, you misinterpreted the tone. I was stating that it wasn't a profession for them, and therefore shouldn't be treated in that regard. Obviously, these guys aren't in it for the money.

 

That means NO ONE, not fans, not coaches, not players has the right to berate or degrade the official. These guys donate their free time to serving you as parents, players, and coaches and they deserve your respect. Until you are willing to do the same keep your mouth shut and be glad that someone shows up for your sons/daughters game.

 

On a side note, the mental pictures I got of you yelling at me while I'm golfing or cross stiching were priceless. :lol:

They're getting paid so they are open to some civilized questionning by the coaches only. However, they aren't getting paid enough for questionning from parents and definitely not players.

I agree and have witnessed this as well. The primary reason for this is that there simply aren't enough officials. It shouldn't happen, but the alternative is to not have the games at all. If you are upset with the problem, then be part of the solution. They are always looking for a few good men (or women)........

I have witnessed these kinds of acts as well. I have seen grown men have young kids who were officiating in tears. Call the police and send them to jail, I've found that to work pretty well. From my experience, police officers tend to not care about explanations as to why you touched an official. Maybe they identify with them a bit, with both serving the "common good" in society, and both being underpaid and underappreciated.

I would have thought the chain gang would be like the scoreboard operator and book person in basketball. Not allowed to make comments or cheer from the scorer's table.

I'm fine with this, and I think most officials are as well. IF, and its a big if, it is civilized. One umpire explained it to me this way: You can walk out in between innings and ask where the pitcher is missing, where the pitch was, etc. But I will not tolerate you yelling and screaming from the dugout about pitches during play.
