October 2, 200718 yr The whole idea of drug testing, IMO, is not necessarly to catch the bad guys, but more to prevent the drug habit from starting in the first place. If the kids know that they could be tested, and know the consequences of their actions, then they may never start (or keep up the habit).

Like many mandates, the affordability is often not taken into consideration.
October 2, 200718 yr The roadblock case was tried in Michigan, I believe... The Courts supported the roadblock, but I do believe they have to advertise that they are having these roadblocks in a certain timeframe. In addition, it seems like the term "reasonable suspicion" has replaced probable cause.
October 2, 200718 yr I'm all for random drug testing for students. I know of quite a few instances of players/students that wouldn't be able to play and would be punished because of failed tests. The only downside would be the cost to do the tests. The majority of the students/parents against random testing are the ones that have to worry about failing it.

October 2, 200718 yr If you're doing nothing wrong I see no reason to be concerned about a drug test. If it's truly random then it's just that... Random. You haven't been singled out by "the man", you just have to show you're clean and be on your merry little way. I get randomly drug tested at work, and I am personally glad... It makes me feel good to know that I am working with people who aren't on drugs for a change.

I think in Pulaski County they have a policy that if you park on campus or participate in school sponsored extracurricular activities, you are in a pool for random drug testing. They have a 3 strike policy. Once you have failed a test, you have a specific amount of time to clean out your system and be restested, but in the meantime, you are prohibited from those extracurricular activities. I know they have lost some good athletes in the process, but what better time for these kids to see the potential consequences for their actions, ... not unlike preemployment or random/suspicion testing at many places of employment.
October 2, 200718 yr If I am not mistaken, one of the arguments that has been used to justify drug testing is that the school has a responsibility to put athletes on the field that are not a danger to the other athletes. The athletes have been trained/coach in the correct way to participate in that sport to not bring unnecessary harm to the other athletes. They have been trained/coached in the rules and methods of safety. And they are not under any drugs that might not have them in the right "frame of mind" during participation of that sport in practice or games. I believe that is one of the arguments that have been put forth.
October 2, 200718 yr Any extra curricular should be tested from football to band. Our school tests all athletes, but band and choir members do not get tested. Are those not competitive events? IMO band and choir and any other type of club needs to be tested
