September 18, 200719 yr http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3025308 McNabb says black QBs under more pressure African-American quarterbacks face more pressure and more criticism than their white counterparts, Philadelphia Eagles QB Donovan McNabb says in an interview scheduled to air on HBO on Tuesday night. McNabb, in an interview on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel," tells interviewer James Brown that African-American quarterbacks such as himself face added pressure because there are fewer black QBs -- and because some still don't want black athletes playing the position. "There's not that many African-American quarterbacks, so we have to do a little bit extra," McNabb tells HBO. "Because the percentage of us playing this position, which people didn't want us to play ... is low, so we do a little extra." Later in the interview, Brown presses McNabb on criticism of his performance -- and if African-American QBs are graded more harshly. "I pass for 300 yards, our team wins by seven, [mimicking] 'Ah, he could've made this throw, they would have scored if he did this,' " McNabb tells HBO.
September 18, 200719 yr Please keep this rule in mind in this discussion. 3. Derogatory comments about anyone's race, religion, nationality, creed or sexual orientation will not be tolerated.
September 18, 200719 yr Is he criticized for being an African American quarterback, or just a poor performing quarterback? The answer seems pretty clear. Stop Crying and do your job. All quarterbacks face criticism.
September 18, 200719 yr "I pass for 300 yards, our team wins by seven, [mimicking] 'Ah, he could've made this throw, they would have scored if he did this,' " McNabb tells HBO. Maybe he should try being Carson Palmer. Throw for 400 yards and 6 touchdowns and still get criticized.
September 18, 200719 yr Philly booed Santa Claus. Unless you're winning Super Bowls, you're going to get cracked on, that's how Philly works...
September 18, 200719 yr It has nothing to do with race...he's getting older, and he's not as good as he used to be...get over it.
September 18, 200719 yr You know it might hold some weight if what the poor guy is going through pales in comparison to what Jackie Robinson went through to give all African Americans the opporunity to play professional team sports.
September 18, 200719 yr Does this remind anyone else of a "dead horse award"??  Besides, the fans in Philly have to be the worst in all of sports (any sport). Any athlete in Philly that doesn't get booed..............now there is story, no wonder it is a city of losers. JMO
September 18, 200719 yr You know it might hold some weight if what the poor guy is going through pales in comparison to what Jackie Robinson went through to give all African Americans the opporunity to play professional team sports. :thumb: Absolutely, or even what Hank Aaron (still the true HR king ) went through during the time that he played and his record breaking season/seasons. (cry me a river D.M. )
September 18, 200719 yr I'm sure he does feel a bit of extra pressure as a black qb. However, I don't think any criticism he gets is due to his skin color. When is the last time he threw for 300 yards? His offense that he directs is boring and listless. They're in a division they can win but struggle. THAT is why the fans boo. In the NFL, its simple: Do well and we love you. Suck and we boo you at the grocery store. P.S. Obviously, some factor in the skin color and lets it effect their ability to be rational. I know that .
September 18, 200719 yr What's very ironic is that he chose to say that Peyton Manning doesn't get criticized as much as he does. He said that if he (McNabb) threw for 300 yards and his team only won by 7 he would catch flak for not making the proper throws to win bigger. Until the Colts won the Super Bowl last year was there a MORE criticized quarterback in the league than Peyton Manning? In spite of his great overall winning percentage and record breaking stats what he was most known for was "not being able to win the big one." McNabb is full of hot air and way off base on this one. Perhaps he would get less criticism if he managed to play a full season once and awhile.
