Scribe's Week Three Football Notebook

Many schools began district play last week as the new block scheduling takes full effect.

Here are some of the highlights from last week:

· First off, hearty congratulations to Rick Massie and Bourbon County, who snapped a 34-game losing streak that dated back to the 2003 season. The Colonels, coached then by Chuke Williams, beat Anderson County 48-13 on Oct. 10, 2003. Earlier this year, Atherton ended a 27-game losing streak, which was the second longest.

· The state’s longest losing streak now belongs to Muhlenberg North at 29 games. Evangel Christian has the second longest at 24. However, one of those streaks will end at some point this year because those two schools are scheduled to play Oct. 27.

· Mercer County saw their state-best 17 game winning streak snapped with a 12-7 loss to Lincoln County. Trinity now has the state’s longest win streak at 16 games and will see that put to the test this weekend when the Shamrocks play nationally-ranked Cincinnati St. Xavier.

· Who now has the state’s second-longest win streak? Daviess County, who is 3-0 after finishing the 2006 season on a short two-game win streak. Like Trinity, Daviess County will have their streak challenged by cross-town rival Owensboro.

· Greenwood quarterback Cory Henon was a busy person against Meade County. He rushed 31 times for 163 yards and completed 11-of-17 passes for 132 yards in the Gators’ 28-21 win over Meade County.

· Bowling Green receiver D.L. Moore had nine catches for 160 yards and two scores, and quarterback Trent Steelman was 23-of-28 passing for 242 yards as the Purples beat North Hardin 36-6.

· Ludlow quarterback Jarrett Rouse hit on 27-of-45 passing for 369 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-21 loss to Bellevue. The ground attack of Thomas Barrett (98 yards on 14 carries) and Ricky Buckler (85 yards in 16 carries) helped Bellevue improve to 3-0.

· Dixie Heights beat Covington Catholic 44-28 and set several school records in the process. Dixie QB Joey Bricking threw for a school-record 300 yards (13-of-30) and four touchdowns, also a record.

· His favorite target, senior E.J. Dettmer, also etched his name into the DHHS record book with 204 receiving yards. Two of his five receptions were for touchdowns.

· Russellville quarterback Mikie Benton threw for 109 yards and ran for 118 more in the Panthers’ 49-6 win over Edmonson County. After playing 71 seasons in Class 1A, Russellville picked up their first win in the new Class 3A.

· Boone County running back Cory Farris continued to find the end zone on a regular basis, scoring three touchdowns as part of his 37-carry, 181-yard performance in the Rebels’ 28-0 win over Campbell County. Farris has nine touchdowns in three games. While Farris is getting the job done on offense, the Boone County defense shut down the Camels by recording six sacks.

· Another team getting the job done on defense is Madison Central, who scored twice off four Oldham County turnovers in a 35-0 win. The Indians’ ‘D’ has 12 interceptions and allowed just 15 points in their 3-0 start.

· Ryle defeated Newport Central Catholic 23-18 despite 335 rushing yards on 51 carries by the ‘Breds. After knocking off a pair of higher-classed teams, NCC suffered their first loss of the season.

· Franklin-Simpson put up 484 yards of offense in their 40-22 win over Allen County-Scottsville. Patrick Flippin had 12 carries for 150 yards, while quarterback Courtney Dalcourt threw for 189 yards and two scores.

· The Blue Tornado of Paducah Tilghman put their blue-collar work ethic on display against Webster County. Tilghman rushed for 681 yards as 15 different players had a carry in their 49-21 win. The Tornado didn’t throw a pass and didn’t have a punt or turnover in picking up the district win.

· Beechwood quarterback Cody Elliott rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns and added 63 through the air as the Tigers handed Dayton their first loss 46-7.

· Danville’s Antwoin Simon rushed for 162 yards on 23 carries as the Admirals beat Boyle County 21-14. Danville has won two straight over the Rebels and lead the all-time series 32-13-1.

· Nelson County picked up their first win of the season with a 13-10 victory over Central Hardin. Bart Bruner’s club drove 73 yards and 13 plays, scoring the game-winner with 27 seconds left.

· Elizabethtown’s J.D. Tanner wasn’t as busy in the Panthers’ 22-7 win over Louisville Holy Cross. The senior was 20-of-33 for 289 yards. · The Deuce was loose as St. Xavier took any game suspense away early in the Tigers’ 41-9 win over Lexington Catholic, the top-ranked team in Class 4A. Deuce Finch rushed for a school-record 323 yards on 16 carries and found the end zone four times. Sophomore Nic Ward completed 31-of-54 passes for 232 yards for Lexington Catholic, who played without injured leading rusher Shane Israel.

Five games to keep an eye on this week::

· Rockcastle County at Bell County – Always the rivalry, both teams are 3-0 and strikingly similar in the standings. Bell County has scored 96 points and given up 27, while Rockcastle has scored 104 points and allowed 28. Rockcastle County has ended Bell County’s season in the playoffs four times since 2001.

· Trinity at Cincinnati St. Xavier – Two football powers in the border states square off in Cincinnati at the school where current Florida Gator head coach Urban Meyer served as a defensive backs coach in 1985. St. Xavier has offensive explosiveness similar to the Gators as they look to end Trinity’s 16-game winning streak – the longest active streak in Kentucky.

· Graves County at Mayfield – These county rivals don’t like one another, and both teams enter this week’s game unbeaten. Graves County has won two of the last three meetings, including the rare 28-0 shutout of the Cardinals last year.

· Male vs. St. Xavier – You never know how this game is going to turn out when you think back several years. This week is the 90th meeting between the schools, with Male holding a 53-34-2 all-time series lead, including the last two in a row.

· Dixie Heights vs. Highlands – The two favorites in District 5 square off in Fort Mitchell, with the winner gaining the inside track for the district’s top seed.
