Those are split from the Democrats standing opposed to it because it is coming from a Republican and the Republicans who will support it because it is coming from a Republican.

Lamar Alexander: I would expect he would do that over the next couple of weeks. So I should let him do it rather than try to do it for him.

 

But, based on his history, I know that as he looks at our country probably his preeminent principle is federalism, that we ought to expect more from our states and our cities and ourselves than we do from Washington, D.C..

 

And overseas it would be strength. He was one of the early voices warning against the dangers of terrorism. And today he's waved a strong red flag about the danger of Iran. So strength abroad and federalism at home would be what I've gleaned from his time as a senator and his life experiences. And we'll see what he says over the next couple of weeks.

Lamar Alexander: Well, probably the best known Senate accomplishment was the Department of Homeland Security. He was the Chairman of the Government Operations Committee and he managed that bill. And that was his piece of legislation in 2002, which was his last year in the Senate.

He's being pegged as an actor, but that seems to be a minor role in his life. From Wikipedia:

 

Thompson is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a Visiting Fellow with the American Enterprise Institute, specializing in national security and intelligence.[

 

While in private practice, he also accepted appointments as Special Counsel to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1980–1981), Special Counsel to the Senate Intelligence Committee (1982), and Member of the Appellate Court Nominating Commission for the State of Tennessee (1985–1987.)

 

Thompson was appointed minority counsel for the hearings surrounding the Watergate scandal.

 

In 1977, Thompson represented Marie Ragghianti, who was a former Tennessee Parole Board chair. Ragghianti had refused to release felons who had bribed aides to Democratic Governor Ray Blanton in order to obtain clemency.

 

Thompson has been a lobbyist intermittently since 1975, and has earned about $1 million from his lobbying efforts during that time. Except for the year 1981, his lobbying never amounted to more than a third of his income.

Wow, it's probably been 30 years since I've seen a picture of Sam Ervin. :eek: I suddenly feel old.

 

I didn't really know this about Thompson. Anybody that sat on that committee and did the job they did on Nixon's henchmen suddenly moves to the front of the bus in my eyes. That was truly one time I feel that the American legislature did their job well and did it with less political bias than anytime ever since. :thumb:
