September 2, 200719 yr Cal squashes SEC arrogance with mauling of Tennessee http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10328834 1) 14 points is FAR FAR FAR from a "mauling" (UT was up 35-0 last year, THATs a mauling) 2) #2 Pac10 team vs. #5 SEC team. 3) Cal was the higher ranked team, playing at home. I won't even argue Coker being out or Ainge's broken pinky, because I don't think that had much to do it. Cal was the better team. End of story. BUT since when does a top team (2 of 10) from conference A beating a middle of the pack team (5 of 12) from conference B mean conference A is better? Is the Big10 better than the SEC because UM beat Vandy last year? Is the Big East better than the SEC because UofL beat UK or WVU beat Mississippi State?
September 2, 200719 yr Is the Big10 better than the SEC because UM beat Vandy last year? Is the Big East better than the SEC because UofL beat UK or WVU beat Mississippi State? I personally think that ranking conferences against others doesn't amount to anything. When it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter at all. A lot of teams from most conferences can beat teams from other conferences on any given day. What does that prove?
September 2, 200719 yr I'll grant you that the Big East rep will always have the advantage of playing in a much weaker conference and not getting beat up every week like in the SEC....... Now that's funny...I don't care who you are...

A lot of teams from most conferences can beat teams from other conferences on any given day. What does that prove? It matters when it comes to the bowls. When big teams don't go OOC and play other big teams, you have to guess how good a team is based on their conference. Everyone thought the Big10 was so good last year that maybe they had the #1 and #2 teams in the country. They almost both went to the title game. Lucky for us that didn't happen and the Big10 got exposed as not being all that great.

September 2, 200719 yr Now that's funny...I don't care who you are...   I'm going to guess that 95% of people who have followed college football for more than six months can grasp that a grueling SEC schedule will take more out of a team, and having to play the extra game in the SEC championship makes it that much tougher... If you don't think that a Big East team is less banged up than an SEC team at the end of the year, oh never mind... Even with the obvious, I'm not making excuses. The SEC will still win far more than their fair share of those games...

The SEC will still win far more than their fair share of those games... But you are...You're saying the BEast rep will always have an advantage on an SEC opponent in a bowl game because the SEC team plays a more grueling schedule. That's an EXCUSE, and a weak one at best. If you play in one of the BCS games, you have 2-3 weeks AT LEAST to prepare for those games. If you can't get healed up in that time, you need a new team physician....

September 3, 200719 yr When it comes to bowl games I really don't think the schedule makes too much of a difference from a tough physical stand point, except for players who are injured who can't make it back for the bowl game. This could happen with any team though, and is not always an example of having to play really tough football teams. Florida had a tougher way to go last year than Ohio St, playing several more knockdown-drag out games that were very close. And they mopped the floor with OSU.

I want my opponent to have a game against one of the top teams in the country, and getting banged up some more, while my team is idle and getting an extra week to heal, in addition to not getting banged up any more... Just me though...
September 4, 200719 yr I just love it how all these headlines say that the VOLS got "mauled" and "destroyed". The game was very close and you had a seasoned Cal team with the top receiver in the country, a good QB and a very young Tn Defense. They did stop CAL on three straight possessions and had their chances to get the game even. But after last year, Cal just refused to lose. The VOLS will be there at the end and to the KY fans: Don't think you are going to do to TN what you did to EKU. If EKU can run on you, you are NOT going ot stop the VOLS rushing attack. Oh and BTW, at least the VOLS had the guts to step up and play a real team to start the season with. Shows how much confidence that the coaching staff has in themselves and the team.

UT is always good. I do think UK has a better chance this year than they have had in a while of beating UT though. As for schedules UK and UT has 1 of the toughest in the nation every year. I don't see the problem here.
September 4, 200719 yr Cal is better than UT. Does it prove anymore than that? Not really, the Pac 10 is a very good conference, obviously one of the best year in and year out. The SEC is brutal every year and produces more NFL talent than any other league, but that does not mean that the SEC is necessarily the best conference every year.
September 4, 200719 yr :thumb: Cal looked tough. They are going to be a lot of fun to watch this year. I was surprised Tennessee stayed in it for so long, maybe Cal's defense isn't that great. My thoughts too. I expected Cal to win easier.

The SEC is brutal every year and produces more NFL talent than any other league, but that does not mean that the SEC is necessarily the best conference every year. :thumb: Ultimately, that's about all these games prove. And, I'd take it a step further...it only proves that Cal was better than UT on September 1, 2007. It doesn't even mean that Cal will be better than UT at season's end. They probably will be, but some teams decline and some improve over the course of a season...you never know. The best method, IMO, is for an informed football fan to watch the season unfold, watch the teams and decide for himself/herself who they think is the best and who is the best conference. The SEC is the best more often than others, but it doesn't mean the Big Ten or Big 12 or whoever can't supplant them on any given season. If you take a decade of time, then you have to give the SEC the nod, but that doesn't mean they were the best all ten seasons...and it doesn't mean that the other conferences can't produce teams who can beat the SEC's elite. They do it all the time. These head-to-head matchups and all that are good for discussion though... Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the SEC turned out to be a little overrated this year. Florida is replacing a lot of starters...Georgia needs to make a big improvment to return to their previous level...Tennessee isn't going to live up to their potential as long as Phil Fulmer is coach...ditto for LSU, IMO...and so on and so forth... ...then again, they may be as good as advertised. Personally, I'm not buying the hype that this is the best the SEC has ever been.
