One in four read no books last year

WASHINGTON - There it sits on your night stand, that book you've meant to read for who knows how long but haven't yet cracked open. Tonight, as you feel its stare from beneath that teetering pile of magazines, know one thing — you are not alone.

One in four adults read no books at all in the past year, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Tuesday. Of those who did read, women and older people were most avid, and religious works and popular fiction were the top choices.

Maybe not, but I did watch three out of four movies last year.

I didn't read any books but I will argue that I think reading "books" is overrated!

I read three last week and just finished up a textbook this week.

How ironic is it that the first 4 people to respond to this thread, 3 haven't read anything recently and one has.

I say that reading magazines is just as healthy as reading books. Mags like SI and ESPN, and different car magazines, they all use language that older kids use and can learn to understand.

I read enough BGP for it to be considered a book at least 1 a week.

Wow! I probably read a book a week. Just got finished reading Einstein(which I would recommend). I enjoy reading-love to read biographies, romances, mysteries, etc...I give credit to my love of reading to my grandmother. When I stayed with her in the summers growing up, she got me hooked on Harlequin romances. We would read then switch books. I use to travel by plane alot and a good book maked cancellations/delays alot easier to take. It really shocks me that so many people don't read books.

I have The Art of War and the Biography of Jimi Hendrix sitting on my night stand collecting dust. I sometimes feels guilty when I look at them.

Then I suggest finding a nice drawer for them...

Jeez, and I thought I had a short attention span. I probably read 50 in the last year, and I can't even recall what I had for lunch yesterday.

Over a whole year I would say I read an average of 3 a month or 36 or so a year. I like to read history and biographies.

It is kinda sad that 3 out of 4 people have not read a book in the last year! There are so many good books out there! Right now I am reading a book called A Long Way Gone. I had to read it as a pre-assignment for school and didn't think I would like it but I was wrong. Would recommend it to everyone. Really opened my eyes about what is going on in the world!

I can't imagine not living close to a library or bookstore. I realize we're all busy but I simply cannot understand one not having the desire to read books.
