Lunch and supper for me, but for some reason, when I eat out for the evening meal, I say "Let's go out to dinner."

Exactly the same in our home. When we're eating at home and it's time to come to the table, we say "Time for supper" to whoever is at home; but if we're going out, we say "Let's go out to dinner".

I knew we would find something in common.:thumb:

Lunch and Dinner also :D

That's two things! I love the guy in orange in your avatar. :thumb: :D

I do the same thing. Lunch at midday, supper at evening unless we have company or go out, then it's dinner. Must be a hillbil...er, Appalachian-American thing.

You and BRJB are going to laugh at me, but I do the same thing!

Lunch and dinner. I've never heard the midday meal called anything but lunch but I always thought that dinner and supper were interchangeable depending on your upbringing.

See, BRJB, I told you those city dwelling, left leaning, private school supporting, Catholics was jus' like us. :D

Just teasing, RM. Did I leave anything out?

I think supper and dinner have almost come to have seperate meanings in common usage. Like you all said, "supper" is used to indicate the last meal of the day, when served at home. "Dinner" is used when discussing that same meal on special occasions, away from home.

Right. A "formal" supper.

I don't know....I think you covered it, but you may want to run it by BRJB to make sure! :D

I think somewhere once said "tree-hugging, Birkenstock-wearing"...but then someone else said "Prada Combat Boot wearing"....

Who would say an awful thing like that about you? :sssh:

The reason I brought up the "geographical question" in the first post is that my wife's relatives are from Greenup County; and they've always called the midday meal dinner. I didn't know if that was an Eastern KY or Appalachian thing, or if it was more of a family thing.

Who would say an awful thing like that about you...

...on a daily basis?

:thumb: Lunch and Dinner.
