just 4 fun
I was reading about the Beechies scrimmage with Highlands.. I saw several posts claiming this years version of the Tigers may be the best ever. Then I read where they got beat 49-14 or something like that. Now, I'm no Beechwood expert, but, I have seen them play in state a few times and know they've had some very good teams in the past, especially one from the early 90s, it may have been 91 or 92? Can't remember exactly, but, I'm very hard pressed to believe this to be one of there best teams, considering the score of the Highlands game. I know it's just a scrimmage and I know alot was probably done on the 2nd and 3rd units, but, how can you get beat that bad and claim possibly "Best Ever" status. My 2nd ? is, does there coaching staff even care the score and play alot of new faces just to see how they stack up? If thats the case, it makes a little more sense to me... GoBigRed
Yeah, I get the feeling that a lot of Beechwood fans think that little ol Mayfield should just pack their stuff up and go home, but its all good, that kind of talk really gets some kids fired up and thats what they need come playoff time. I played against the '97 version of the Tigers. I find it hard to believe that this team is as good as that team was. That team beat the AAA state champs, Purcell Marian who, I believe, won the GCL North, Wyoming with Richard Hall, North Jaggers or something like that, and then beat Highlands in their scrimmage. That team was STACKED and enormous. I saw this Beechwood team last and I don't see how they've improved that much over the course of an offseason to be better than a defending state champ that returned 8 starters on both sides of the ball. Yes, I remember that 97 team...They were virtually unchallenged in there class that year... I remember Hancock Co had a very good QB and a few decent linemen, but, that was about it.. Beechwood hammered em in the finals...
Beechwoodfan
This year's team is going to be very good. Best ever? I have heard that said, but as far as I am concerned, that title has to be earned. Perhaps we will know in December. Or at least will have more facts to debate on. I am not aware of any Beechwood fans saying that Mayfield should pack it up. That is not something we would say about any team. We like great competition. As far as the scrimmage was concerned, like most scrimmages it was not played like a real game. Lots of players in and out. Highlands beat us every year in our scrimmage. Could the Tigers beat them in an official game? It would be tough to beat a powerhouse like Highlands, but I do think that the score would be closer than the scrimmage score. One thing I know about the Tigers is that they get better and better as the season goes on.
just 4 fun
Looking at the final score of a scrimmage and then making judgments would be unwise. Noone here is making judgments or claims... It's some of the Beechie followers who are making such strong claims, not me... I'm simply calling a question to its merit and asking what some in the know think of it... theguru
If anyone from Beechwood ever underestimates Mayfield they are a fool considering our record against the Cards. However, I still think Beechwood was the better team in 95. I believe the varsity portion of the scrimmage was three touchdowns to one with one of those touchdowns coming in large part as a result of the Beechwood punting game. This Highlands team is very good too. This Beechwood team is one of the best ever and it will be difficult to Class 1A teams to begin to match up with their size and strength. Highlights: The Tigers defeated four opponents from larger schools during the regular season and went on to claim their sixth Class A state title in seven years. They finished 14-0, which was the only perfect record in the state. Adam Wulfeck was voted Offensive Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound senior tailback rushed for 2,268 yards on 284 carries and scored 30 touchdowns. Wayne Holderman was voted Defensive Player of the Year. The 6-foot-6, 280-pound senior defensive end was a major reason the Tigers allowed only 158 yards per game. Yeagle, who has a 91-9 record in seven seasons at Beechwood, is the first high school football coach in Ken tucky to win six state titles. But this year's team put the Tigers' winning tradition on an even higher pedestal by beating four regular-season opponents from much larger schools - Wyoming (Ohio), Covington Catholic, North Hardin and Purcell-Marian (Ohio). All four of those teams qualified for the playoffs and Covington Catholic ended up winning the Class AAA state title. The combined record of those four schools was 35-16. The Tigers averaged 36.5 points per game, while giving up only 9.1.

GoBigRed
Its really tough for Beechwood folks to know anything about Mayfield and vice-versa. But from looking at the districts that these two teams are in, I would give the edge to Mayfield's district now with the new realignment.

GoBigRed
What edge? Making the finals? Well, difficulty of district games. I am just looking at the teams that Mayfield and Beechwood have to beat to get out of their respective districts, thats all. Bellvue is the only team I know much about in Beechwoods district, but Fulton City is returning quite a bit this year and so is Crittenden county and Fulton County isn't too shabby in Mayfield's district. I ain't saying its a ton better but it appears slightly better.
just 4 fun
Really? I guess I misunderstood the following: Guess you did...Its a question, not a judgement.. I think, as an outsider looking in, a legit one... Seems to me other Tiger fans seem to question that statement, too.. How about defending the position, if you feel that way rather than attacking me. Or at least attack the others on here who may have the same opinion and a little more insight than me...

Beechwood drilled Harrodsburg in the finals in 1997. I wasn't there, but I know people that saw all four championship games that thought Beechwood was the best of the eight finalists.
