Best Defense In NKY?

Featured Replies

I'm not sure Highlands kept D stats last year. And even if they did, tackling stats aren't very reliable. I've seen players get credit for a tackle if they added on to the pile after someone else had obviously stopped the runner's progress. If that's a tackle, I'm Twiggy.

Are Highlands LBers the best in the state or for that matter the County? Who knows and its obviously just a poster's pure speculative opinion. But with Ball, Stine and Hurtt returning as 3 year starters and Fitzgerald returning as a 3 year starter, it would seem Gryche's opinion is as valid as any other poster's opinion on here.

As to Dixe's LBers, they may have a bunch of starters returning, but they sure haven't shown much in the way of becoming the best LBing corps in N. Ky. when they've started against Highlands the last two years.

As for Brueggeman, nice LBer. Better from my observation than the Dixie Lbers. But keep in mind that most offenses last year were a lot more worried about getting Flynn, Geisen and Sutton blocked than Brueggeman. This year he won't have that "luxury".

As for the Camels, I haven't seen them play so I can't and won't speculate.

Your right on Brueggeman , He's the better LB over Stine , Ball and Hurtt . He reminds me alot of Flynn and Geisen . Always in the right spot to make the play . I don't see him having any problem this year either ! As far as Dixies LB's ,both I believe had double digit tackles against Highlands in those games .( Not to bad against that O ) I think the game had more to do with your Mammoth O-LINE then our LB's not showing much . It all starts up front on both sides of the ball ! Going from last year stats , the TOP returning LB's are Dixie - Benson ( 104 ) CCH - Brueggeman ( 98 ) CC - Sauerbeck ( 66 ) !

I don't think LN said that in his post...... For Stine he is the most athletic LB for his size in NKY.. The kid starts on HHS basketball team. That right there should tell you that he is a heck of an athlete....

Highlands really only had two big O-Line guys last year. Their dominance was created more by strength, technique, and a will to be the best. I honestly don't recall any Dixie LBs standing out in that game. Now if everyone named in this debate has paid their dues in the off season, we should have a whale of a game at Dixie. Lets hope thats the case. My answer to the post is Highlands! Of course:banana:

I believe Schmitz from Ryle had 141 tackles (88 solo) last year. Also, had game high 12 tackles in state final game.

I'm not surprised to see his name on top of the list. He is a heck of a defensive player. Sauerbeck's numbers seem about right to me too. He's good, but I think Benson has a little better nose for the ball as his numbers demonstrate. Plus isn't there another LB on CC that had pretty good numbers as well last season? If I'm not mistaken I think the other kid was a senior so it's possible that his numbers will go up this season.

Sauerbeck's numbers aren't as high mainly because he had 66, Woodruff 63, Owens 56 and Kidwell 53 all LB's and thier DE Eaten had 45. They were all juniors and return this year. I thought we were talking about LB's as a group. By the way, found the stats in the enquirer, thanks.

Is that big #78 kid from Highlands going to get any looks on D this year? With the professed "play both ways" movement, maybe HHS can get some "size" on the D line.

ASking your linebackers to both have double digit totals in tackles in one game is not a good thing. This means they were on roller skates most of the game and the opposing offense controls the ball and keeps the Dixie offense sitting. I dont think much of total tackles, I look more at Team Defense and 3 and outs. How many 3 and outs did Dixie have last season? Those are the stats that count. Not taking anything away from a kid who is flying around and involving himself in as many tackles as he can but overall its about keeping the opposing offense off the field and stopping them as a team.

Great point Gryche. Not only do some people generously "award" tackles, having a lot of tackles after a 10 yd gain does not mean you are a great defensive player. Yds gained before tackle is a greater measure (although I don't know of any program that keeps that stat) and even that stat can be misleading unless the strenght of opposition is figured into the equation. Having a lot of 3 and outs, tackles for loss or for little gain against a weaker schedule is not necessarily as big of an indicator of performance as it otherwise would appear to be on paper. Its all so subjective, but then again, its that subjectivity that allows us to have all the different opinions that drives this place and makes the Guru so much money:jump:.

Your right on total TEAM Defense . If one part of the D breaks down or is pushed around , its very hard to get 3 and outs . It's like in a game with very little time left , you know there going to pass the ball and to who . But you can't stop them . As far as 3 and outs for Dixie , they had alot .( But I wish we would have had more early on ! ) The past couple of yrs we started slow , but this yr ( Hopefully ) I think things changed on how the coaches are doing things ! Football is about TEAM on O and D , but you know how people like to blow up numbers on the O side of the ball ! Forest G. has 45 TD's and a million yds this year ! But not once does it say , Koop leads the area in pancake blocks ! Thats some stat's I'd love to see printed for them Big Boy's up front ! Yes it's all about TEAM and just for fun this year, I'm going to keep that stat " 3 and outs for Dixie ":D I'll let ya know at the end of the year how many !!!:thumb:

Over the past few years, Dixie has had some very solid defenses, specifically the year they upset Trinity. However, they've never been much of a 3 and out defense. They're more of a bend, but don't break defense. Teams seem to move the ball from 20 to 20, but that's it.

Best in the state? They may not be the best in the County. Highlands may be alot better than Campbell County a lot of positions but not at linebacker. Sauerbeck is the best in NKY and add in Woodruff both three year starters. Also Owens. All over 6ft and all between 210 and 230.

Have to agree with you....the Camels should be tough on "D"!! With the Beast at LB and add Woody and Owens look out! GO CAMELS!!
