Atlanta Braves / Texas Rangers - Trade

Recommended Posts

Atlanta gets:

1B-Mark Teixiera

RP-Ron Mahay

Texas gets:

C-Jarrod Saltalamachia

SS-Elvis Andrus (MLB defines him as the next Derek Jeter)

2 pitching prospects

Ok here is my take on this trade.

Good: It's great that the Braves finally have a solid 1st baseman instead of having to platoon with a 50 year old man that can't really play anymore. Braves had another .300 hitter to their lineup and they add another switch hitter to go along with Chipper Jones. Not giving up any, right now, players also help because it didn't hamper our starting lineup any. Braves get a left reliever to fill the role of injured pitcher Mike Gonzalez.

Bad: Well Salty is getting rave reviews and could be a superstar one day and we will probably only have Teixeira for only a season and a half. Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus is being called the next Derek Jeter and that was one person the Braves didn't want to trade. Depending on the 2 pitching prospects it could be a better deal for Texas in the long run. Rumors are going around that one prospect may be Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson, he is highly regarded and has a big future in the majors one day. The worse thing is that Scott Boras is his agent.

On the surface, this looks like a terrible trade. Which would be in keeping with the front office performance of late.

The LAST thing Atlanta should have given up were pitching prospects. While their hitting has struggled at times this year, it's been far more consistent than their pitching.

Wow, the Rangers got a ton in this deal. Dunn's price tag, I would think, just went up. Teixira was the best offensive player on the market, and Gammons said the other day that his trade would set the market for the rest (namely: Dunn and Dye if he is dealt).

Good deal for Texas.

Yeah...if Cincy could get something like this for Adam Dunn, wow...I'd be tickled pink.

If these prospects are as good as advertised, the Braves made a horrible trade, IMO. This trade no doubt will improve them in the short term, but not much...and not nearly enough to make them a serious title contender, IMO. And, for what they gave up, anything less than bumping them up to serious contender status should have been unacceptable.

If I was a braves fan I wouldn't be to happy about that. I don't think that does much to make them contenders this year and they gave up a lot of young talent for it.

To the average fan yes it does look like they gave up a lot of talent to get him, but as a Braves fan I am glad about this trade.

1. When was the last time the Braves wound up on the short end of trading prospects? Odalis Perez for Gary Sheffield, Andy Marte for Edgar Renteria, Max Ramirez for Bob Wickman (good last year, not so this year). Ummm can't think of his name right off hand, but the Prospects we gave up for Hudson, and Wainwright for JD Drew (only kinda bad one I can think of). The Braves are also loaded with great farm systems and can afford to trade them. It seems that the Braves have great prospects but when they're traded they fade away so it always ends up to the Braves advantage.

2. Braves needed a full-time 1B in the worst way. They ranked last in the MLB in RBI's and BA for a 1B so we needed an upgrade.

Now the Braves lineup will look something like this:

1. LF-Willie Harris, .325 1 HR 19 RBI's 16 SB

2. SS-Edgar Renteria, .333 10 HR's 52 RBI's

3. 3B-Chipper Jones, .341 17 HR's 56 RBI's

4. 1B-Mark Teixeira, 297 13 HR's 49 RBI's(AL with Texas)

5. CF-Andruw Jones, .216 20 HR's 68 RBI's

6. RF-Jeff Francouer, .297 11 HR's 68 RBI's

7. C-Brian McCann, .263 11 HR's 59 RBI's

8. 2B-Kelly Johnson, .287 10 HR's 50 RBI's

9. P-pitchers spot

that's a pretty good lineup with 5 of your first 6 hitters hitting .297 or better.

Like I just said there are rarely any times that the Braves have traded away a prospect that has lived up to or beyond their potential that they had while in the Braves organization. Atlanta knows how to prep their players and develop them, some organizations can't. I seriously doubt John Scherhoulz would have made this deal knowing that talent he was giving up might come back to haunt him.

Even if the Braves could have traded for Teixeira withought giving up Salty what good would that do? McCann just signed a 6year extension and Texieira would have been the everyday player at 1B so now going to Texas he is going to get an everyday chance of playing!

Atlanta got hosed big time...

We shall see, but I'm telling you guys this isn't as bad as it looks. I guarantee you that this trade is what propels Atlanta into the playoffs and that this trade will not come back to haunt them.

Also with Andruw leaving after this season the Braves are more likely to try and sign Teixeira to an extension with the payroll increase.

Salty could have easily been turned in to the long term answer at 1B...

Could have been but that wasn't the Braves plans. Who knows how he would have turned out too. Look at Scott Thorman who was supposed to be the Braves answer at the beginning of the year, he was a bust.

It has potential to come back and haunt the Braves but looking at their track record of trading away highly regarded prospects, it won't!

As long as you keep drinking the kool aid I guess all is well... :p

Most (all) believe Mark will sign with Baltimore when his deal is up.

If the Braves win the East this year (or at least the Wild Card) than it may well have been worth it. I'm just saying they gave up a bunch.

Yeah there is speculation that he wants to play in Baltimore after his contract is up but he also said he wants to play for a winning team so those two things are totally opposite of each other.
