No not at all, range is very important for an SS but speed isn't everything. Reyes may have speed but what if he catches a late jump, while Renteria is getting a great jump with average speed? Wouldn't those both cancel out?

Yeah, in about three years. The Braves have a history of making the right trade at the right time, and I think this will be seen as one of those.

 

And he may be from Balmer, but nobody in their right mind signs with Baltimore these days. He knows that. Absolute chaos in the front office from the owner's office right on down.

 

Besides, although Teixiera may be from Maryland he didn't play college ball there --- he signed with another ACC school, one which is very relevant to this discussion.

Sure, if you can accurately make the assumption that Renteria always gets a "great jump" and Reyes always gets a "late jump." Always is never correct.

I'm not claiming to be up on all of the stats, but if cshs would like to help I'm going out on a limb and saying he gets to more balls and covers a bigger area of the field w/ his quickness. I realize you're a Braves fan, but to say he's the best SS in all of baseball is a bit of a reach. I'm pointing out that I'd take him 4th in his division if I got to pick.

 

And that's your opinion. I know I'm in the minority and may be a little bias but I've watched Renteria all season and he's come up with clutch hit after clutch hit while providing great defense. IMO the only thing that seperates Renteria from the rest of the NL shortstop's is that they are lightning fast while Renteria isn't. Other than that I see no difference in their style of play which makes me pick Renteria over the others because of his ability to come through under pressure, I like clutch hitters, I think they are in a league of their own when they can consistently come through when the team needs them too.

The Braves need starting pitching, in my opinion and watching Franco bat so much, makes my back hurt.

 

I'm not sure on Salt'm, but Teixiera can produce, than it's going to help the lineup. Plus, Andruw Jones will be moving on, so the Braves may take on the "who dey" moniker and it actually applies, in '08.

Braves are doing all the right things to make a post season run, maybe the reds can package a deal that sends arroyo to Atlanta for there young shortstop Escobar.

Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus is being called the next Derek Jeter and that was one person the Braves didn't want to trade.

Admittedly the kid's 19, but he's hitting .244 and based on the comparison of his batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage (.244/.328/.335), he's a singles hitter who walks 10 percent of the time. He's about to match his 2006 season total for strikeouts with a month left in the minor-league season; on the other hand, his next home run will be his career-high! (It will be his fourth of the year if he hits it. Still a career high.)

 

He may break out at some point, but at this point he appears to be all glove and no bat. That's an acceptable loss.

Not saying he'll end up being the next Jeter but I just go by what they say at the time, but I mean almost every highly regarded minor leaguer is compared to someone so it really means nothing.

He had 50+ saves one of those years. Their setup guys must have been doing something right.

^ He had 155 or so saves in a little over 3 years or so as the Braves closer, so the bullpen was pretty solid over that course.
