What does it take to became a State Champ?

Featured Replies

I know that the state championship games won't be played until December, but we all know that what we are doing now with our summer practices can have an impact with what we do in the upcoming season. So let's hear it from you, what do you do at practice, what do you say at practice, or what do you believe in to make your team practice like a state champ?

X's and O's are no substitute for Jimmys and Joes. Great talent makes coaches look smart.

Now lets not put it totally in the kids hands. There are some occasions where better coaching will beat more athletically gifted teams. Some high school coaches can inspire their young men and that is the "X" factor IMO. Jimmies and Joes will become much better when a solid "program" is in place too.

Back what it takes to be a State Champ......

Great Coach, Great Kids, and the support of the community IMO.

In my senior season at Breathitt Co. (2002), we won the state championship, and it was based on what Onetoya said. It took an excellent coach who had already won state championships ('95. '96) in Mike Holcomb. A great group of 18 seniors who were leaders, worked their butts off, and never had any problems with anything, and the support of the small town of Jackson. When 5,000+ show up to a football game in a town of 2,300, you know you have the support. And I think it takes the X's and O's, as well as the Jimmy's and Joe's. Our quarterback, Justin Haddix, probably called 80% of the plays on the field. He had the greenlight from Coach Holcomb to run any play he thought would work, and to audible at any time. This was all based on the fact that we had been drilled over and over and over on the same plays, patterns, and drills every day by Coach Holcomb and Coach Chapman. I guess it all boils down to what a team is made up of. In our state semifinal game against Russell, we won 28-27 in OT. Plain and simple, we shouldn't have won. We played horrible (12+ penalties, 5 turnovers) but we had the intestinal fortitude to not quit and somehow pull it out. There is no one factor though that can "win" a state championship. It takes effort from everyone.

It takes 15 straight victories or 5 straight victories beginning in November :D

Be a big school and play in a lower class.:sssh:

I personaly think it take a real good work habit out of all players, plus coaches and a good winter work outs. In the winter weights, quickness drills, fitness workout, In the summer the same as winter, plus you need good coaches that gets the kids out to play that can make them feel like a family. Also it take alot of support for the area. Feeder programs..... are were its at.

LUCK

I have always said that I would rather be lucky than good(at least in my golf game).

I was never there but I can imagine it would start in the middle of December a team of young men pulling together and hitting the weights doing everything together banding together as brothers and when you hit the field in june preparing for passing camps taking every snap like its your last and when the season starts you practice like every game you are preparing for is the state championship 100% focused and losing is not an option; I wish I could do it again thats how I would do it.

Let it go J.B. , I was pulling for Russell as well but Mercer Co. Won. :sssh: :D

I have never known a state title team that didn't have an outstanding defensive line.

Just make the playoffs and then win out.
