Mercer/Somerset saga continues

How did Yeast drop the ball?

Here is the quote from the article: "Jaggers said he told Mercer athletics director Terry Yeast then that the schools were going to play and he had his 10 games for the 2007 and 2008 seasons."

Yeast should have confirmed with Somerset. That's his job.

McGlone has nothing to do with this thread.

The title of the thread is not "Coach McGlone's Character"

If it were, we would say thank you.

You shouldn't expect posters to not give opinions because you state the obvious about one of the most respected coaches in the state.

I'm just glad to see Coach Jaggers is catching up with technology and checking e-mail. A coach told me a couple years ago he tried to e-mail coach Jaggers about a film exchange and he never heard back from him.

No lesson to be learned here my friend. I have not said one word in complaint about Somerset or Mercer. Don't know who dropped the ball or did what.

Mcglone has nothing whatsoever to do with the Mercer/Somerset situation. If you want to talk about his character, start a thread for such.. It appears some are trying to get this thread way off base...

...Like Larry Vaught wrote in the paper, if you dont think that dang near every coach in the state doesnt at first VERBALLY agree on a game before the contract is ever signed, then maybe, just maybe you are the one that is confused.

Yes, most are AGREED on verbally first...BUT if you do not have the paperwork, then you do not have a game and you should not expect a game. That is why coaches get itchy to get contacts signed. CONTRACTS were invented for THE EXACT REASON of situations like this. If you don't understand that, then you my friend are the one who is confused.

Perhaps Mr. Jaggers should learn that the day and age of spitting in your hand and shaking are over and we now use paperwork. And what is so dishonorable about paperwork? Is paperwork not the norm of today's society?

Let's keep the discussion on the topic and not each other.

With over 2000 views and over 100 posts concerning the issue on 2 threads, we know little more than we started with. Is this a moot issue or is there more to come? Should we just let the old horse lay down and move on?...:ylsuper:

We are talking about a the coaching profession. Many of coaches agree to play one another verbally at the State Finals, Nike Clinic, and other places. In high school football you have to think they will stand behind what they say. It takes schools time to get contract together. If they agree on May 21st it wouldn't be uncommon to not have the contract by July. School is ending the have other things to do.

Bottom line is Somerset should have honored a gentlemens agreement. It is writing by both head coaches. Email is a good way to document conversation.

if I was Jaggers I would be ticked off too.

AMEN! When coaches agree to play the contract is expected. Other wise there would be 3-4 contracts pending per week and in the coaching ranks a coaches name would quickly become blimished. In my years in HS sports this is the first time I have heard of a football coach verbally agreeing to a date and home/home contract via e-mail and a coach backing out...more less without calling to say...I changed my mind...granted he had bigger issues going on.

We are supposed to be turning boys to men and I (for some reason I'm in the minority) believe the somerset coach is 100% in the wrong. It has nothing to do with hand spitting and paper work...it is about character.

Scheduling begins in Oct./Nov. and a lot, if not most, of the schools are set by the state championships/clinics etc.

A KHSAA contract can be printed off the website at any time. I requires very little writing (mostly fill in the blanks) and the signature of a desiginated school official from each school. With faxes, it can be done in a matter of 30 min. It is not that hard.

Here is guessing that between May 21st and the following 3-4 weeks, Im guessing that Cobb was more concerned with what his future might hold as far as a JOB goes, and rightfully so, that was a whole lot bigger fish to fry. Jaggers respected that, which is why he didnt bother Cobb with it during those weeks. Just a little somethin', somethin' to think about.:jump:

I dont have a clue about what anybody has to worry about..and in Coach McGlone's case, I hope is nothing but good things, but I was just giving an example that y'all could relate to on your end.:thumb:

And that's all well and good. As for what other things McGlone has to take care of, for the last few years he has had to worry about the health of his wife Gloria as she has been battling breast cancer.

As for the negative replies, there was NOTHING negative in any reply responding to it. Someone brought his name into the discussion, I merely related how he leaves the paperwork to others whose job it is to do those types of things. Yes, he was asked if there was anyone in particular he wanted to pick up with three new open dates via the reclassification. He told the AD he didn't care who he scheduled with one exception. There was one team he did not want scheduled for various reasons. The AD went out and got three games with opponents willing to play the Red Devils who also had corresponding open dates.

Now, as for Vaught's contention that coaches do this sort of thing all the time, maybe he's the one not as in the know as he'd like to think. Coaches I have talked to say they have made verbal agreements with each other before BUT they don't consider it a done deal until the contracts are completed and returned.

On a side note, it's interesting how Mercer is all upset over losing a game they expected to be playing...seems like they left ten schools in a similar situation last year. Although I'd imagine those games did have one small difference...going by the timing of the merger, I'd guess most, if not all, of those games had signed contracts already in place. Could be wrong on that but the similarities are there nonetheless.

20 years ago (pre-internet), this is a non-story.

I don't think Mercer dropped anybody from their schedule last year. I believe it was Harrodsburg.

I believe those schools were compensated. Due to a breech of contract. Is it $2500?
