Maybe Coach Jaggers biggest fault is his judgement of character (or lack thereof) in this case.

I gotta agree on this one. "Lets play" is far from a done deal and the fact that Metcalfe Co was already mentioned makes it seem kind of naive on Jaggers part. There is no use crying over spilled milk. Play the games actually scheduled and move on.

 

The bottom line is that this has been an infortunate situation, in all aspects. I know Jay Cobb, and from what I know of him and then giving/knowing all of this information, Id be lieing if I said I wasn't shocked at the move that was made.

 

Im going with JoeDirt on this one, because I got a good feeling that if Coach McGlone had talks with a coach of a team in y'alls area that he had a good playing past with, and talks of scheduling a game for the upcomming year were all, but etched in stone, that Coach McGlone or anyone else would take an email messages, phone conversations, hand shake or any other type of "agreement" as the gospel.

 

The thing that's crappy about the whole thing is Mercer could have gone and found another game for week 2, but didnt. Why might you ask?! Easy. Say what you want about Jaggers being naive, crying over spilt milk, whatever it is that floats your boat..but, in those first weeks of June, Cobb was interviewing for the Hendo job and everything that transpired from there. Correct?! Jaggers at least had the respectability not to bother Cobb with the scheduling while he was contemplating his future and the unfortunate, heartfelt dilemma that Cobb was dealing with then.

He has MUCH more important things to worry about than dealing with game contracts and scheduling dates, etc. It has nothing to do with Jaggers or Cobb, just saying how McGlone operates.

I can relate to alot of things. Y'ALL just need to take of business before considering it a done deal. If its not in writing, its not a done deal. Be that right or wrong is not for me to decide. Sometimes situations change and both parties need to be prepared for that.

I find this rather funny. Buffalogap and Joedirt both complimented Coach McGlone for being a man of character, and they get left handed jabs in return.

Russell had talks with Highlands, Danville, & a few other 'biggies" to fill an open date this year. All said "let's play" but after reviewing schedules, etc they couldn't come to terms.

No one jumped the gun and posted the game.

Got signed contracts from 10 teams, then posted their schedule.

Lesson learned.

Agree. Someone asking me if I want to play and game and me responding "yes" would not in my mind mean I have a game definitely scheduled. If Jagers is basing his understanding that there was a committment on just the e mails referenced in the article, I think Jagers made a pretty big leap. I'd follow up and make sure that we have an understanding that we have a game on. Furthermore, given that a lot of coaches throughout the state don't have the authority to commit, i.e. sign the contract, I definitely wouldn't assume that there was a committment until I got a signed contract. I'd tell the other coach that if I don't have a signed contract by such and such date, I'm looking elsewhere. My guess is that is what Jagers will do in the future.

 

In my mind this was just a "failure to communicate" issue and nothing more sinister than that. Jaggers should have been more aggressive in making sure Somerset was committed by a certain date and Cobb should have made sure Jagers understood that until the Principal authorized the game, what Cobb said or indicated wasn't binding on Somerset.

 

End of the day, much ado about nothing. I'm sure part of Jagers venom is based on the fact that he knows he was a little asleep at the switch in making sure that a contract was signed. Unfortunately it looks like at this point that his kids will lose out on a game, but that isn't the end of the world either. Who knows it may be a blessing in disguise for Mercer. One more weel to heal up and work on the basics, and one less opportunity for players to get hurt.
