Had some folks at the Cawood / Leslie co. /Hazard/ Perry co. scrimmage and I was told that Cawood didn't look very good at all, they couldn't stop anyone and they had as much problem on offence. They did have some bright spots but they are only freshman and stepping up will be a big challenge. So even though Harlan didn't have a great showing either I now think that the green team can still put up some big numbers on the young Trojans, and end this series with a pretty good win streak.

Cawood, Cumberland, and Evarts will consolidate next year to make Harlan County Central.

They must have left a little early because Cawood dominated the entire second half of the scrimmage. See ya on the 24th.

I hate to say this about Cawood's football program but it seems like they haven't been able to do hardly anything since I've been around high school football.

 

What's the deal there? Is Cawood another one of those schools that has some decent athletes but they decide not to play or would one say that the ever changing coaching schemes have an impact on the players? It does seem like every year or every other year they either have a new coach OR the coach from the year before totally changes his coaching philosphy?

 

For those of you at there from Trojan-land, pease don't take what I said the wrong way. I would love to see all of my mountain teams do great things on the field but the Trojans seem to never be able to piece things together and have a couple good season right in a row.

I am nowhere near close enough to the Cawood program to pass an accurate judgment, but considering the Trojans became an annual First Round whipping post for Belfry for a few years, I will venture a guess.

 

My estimation would be the uncertainty of a coach for prolonged periods of time. It seems that Cawood has been changing coaches with pretty high regularity, and I ahve watched them go from a spread offense, to a power offense, to an Option Spread, and so on..... at the high school level you have to develop consistency from the feeder program and up, and too many times schools have too high of a turnover rate with their coaches to do so.

 

Now not all of this can be blamed on Cawood, coaches have their own agendas; some use small programs as stepping stones, some are just the best candidate at the time despite having the proper qualifications, and some simply are coaching out of convenience of their job (common in small schools in East KY) but when a better career (usually outside of teaching) presents itself they move on.

 

I will say again, I have no dog in this fight, but this would be a general guess I would make having seen other small programs in the moutnains and what ahs caused their futility.

I just stayed for the first hour and a half, but I saw all the scrimmages where each team ran 10 plays.

 

Cawood scored once on Leslie County on a very nice run by T.J. Green capped by leaping over a defender at the end zone. Leslie didn't score.

 

South Laurel scored on three passes. Cawood's secondary did struggle. Cawood scored on a run by Shadow Westfelt.

 

The Hazard-Cawood scrimmage was scoreless until the final play when a Cawood defender missed an interception, tapped it in the air and a Hazard receiver caught it in the end zone.
