Poverty in Eastern Kentucky

Featured Replies

Honestly, I don't understand the antagonism coming from some of the EKY posters on this issue. I don't think anyone is trying to insult the people of EKY by pointing out these truths. The fact is, there are some people existing in appallingly primitive conditions in parts of EKY. I don't claim to have any answers to the problem; but pretending it isn't there can only serve to sustain it.

I agree, and state again, it is my firm belief that if one wants to get out of poverty, there is more than enough opportunity to do so, and that goes for all of eastern ky.

I didn't say you were arrogant, I said you were ignorant (of the facts.) Big difference. You think E. Ky. depends on farming, and you still think you are qualified to discuss the economy or anything else pertaining to the area, or even be taken seriously??? Too funny! :sssh:

Classic avoidance of the question posed.

Nobody is pretending it isn't there. People are acting like there aren't people existing in appallingly primitive conditions in other parts of the state. I know you won't be offended when I say that for the problems of E. Ky., I still couldn't be made to move away and live in Western Ky. or Northern Ky. at gunpoint...

Classic avoidance of the question posed.

Today you've already learned that farming is a negligible part of the economy of E. Ky...

Baby steps...

I think somebody pointed out that LEGAL farming is a negligible part of the economy of E. KY.;)

As I said, avoidance at its best. Politician by chance?

There aren't. Simple as that.

The question posed pertains to poverty in EKY as it has the highest concentration of poverty in the state. Note the word "highest" and that it does not say "only."

The discussion will go better once you recognize that.

It's already going better since we cleared up that little farming thingy.

You don't know EKYReporter, do you? He, too, got all stiff as a board when someone from the Golden Triangle commented on life in his neck of the woods.

There are plenty of people out there who get irritated with ignorant stereotypes.

That's funny right there. He's right you know, when folks slip below the poverty line, they ship them on a C&O boxcar to EKY and have a shack ready and waiting fer 'em.

So therefore, is farming as a whole important to the E. KY economy?
