Baseballguy
Yeah, there's alot of games to be played, but IMHO this Team is playing pretty hard for this guy. I believe unless the Reds tank the rest of the way, which it doesn't look like they are, Mackanin will be the Manager in 08. One move I would like to see though, is B. Phillips named captain of this Team in 2008.

The Reds are caught in a viscious cycle of bad managers, bad teams, and a bad front office.
futurecoach
As I sain in another thread I believe this guy is the best manager out of the interm managers we have used recently. However with the failure of Miley and Narron to do anything after they lost the interm, I think it dooms Pete eventually in the end and he wont get it... The Scribe
It's easy to manage when you know your job isn't on the line. Sign him up and see if he plays the 10th with five infielders again.
oldrambler
I really do not think that the Reds will go with him. I do believe that he is showing that he is deserving of a manager job somewhere though. I just don't think that the Reds will remove the interim tag. I dont know I would be willing to bet that he is trying what he can to prove that he can be the coach of this team and not just an interm manager. So in all honesty his job really is on the line... HOMELESS CAMEL
It's been said on the Track the Reds thread by GT and many others. Predicting this would happen, Reds fire Narron, bring in someone else, the team starts playing the way they should have back in April and now the NEW manager gets a full contract. Bring in a name guy, a guy with some REAL major league experience. If they were to bring Pete back for next year, we might as well just save all the posts from this years Track the Reds thread, cause it will be the same next year. Baseballguy
IMO, there's no way he's manager next year. Reasons? Is it because he's not a big name guy? Like I asked in another thread, can someone tell me what Sparky Anderson had done before getting the Reds job, or Jim Leyland before he got the Pirates job? The Scribe
Sparky was a AAA manager at Toronto in '64. He managed in the minors until 1969 when he was one of the coaches for the Padres. Was named Reds manager in 1970. Leyland managed in the Tigers' minor league system for 11 seasons (1971-81) before becoming the 3B coach for the White Sox (managed by Tony LaRussa) in 1982. Did that for four seasons before being named the Pirates manager for the 1986 season.

Mackanin Coached 3rd base for the Expos from 1997-2001, then Managed two years in the minors before becoming bench Coach with the Pirates in 2003. All these guys were involved in pro Baseball for years before they got their shot to Manage. My point is: Just because Mackanin isn't a well known guy to the average fan, doesn't mean he can't Manage. Like I said, this Team, and the rest of the season, will determine if he's the Manager next year.
