What's the best team ever from your region?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what some of the opinions will be. What's the best team ever from your region?

The 14th region has had some good ones. Here's my pick:

Hazard Bulldogs, 1965--Although they didn't win the state tournament, they made it to the semifinals with Jim Rose, Chester Rose, Freddie Hogg, Houston Hogg, and Joe Davis. Many thought that team would win the state tournament that year, but after leading Breckinridge County for much of the game, lost in the final minutes to the eventual champs. I realize Hazard won the state tournament with Johnny Cox in 1955, and Carr Creek won it the next year in '56, but IMO the '65 team was the best.

What team from your region do you feel was the best? If you want you may also list all 16 regions. I may do that later myself.

Hard to argue against the Clay Co. team that won state with Farmer back in the 80's (84?). Also tough to argue with the Clay Co. team from 98-99. They had everything you could want in a team in the 13th.

Clay County won the tournament over Ballard when Richie was a junior in 1987, but lost in a great game to much the same Ballard team, led by Allan Houston, in 1988.

I agree with your choice.

The Ashland Tomcat team that won the State Championship, I believe it was in 1960. Best team ever from the 16th Region.

I agree, The team with Conley, Sargent, Smith was the best high school team ever in the 16th. I'm not really sure of the year but I think it was 1960. Bob Wright was their coach.

The 1987-88 Clay County teams were the best I've seen. Clay wasn't that special in 98-99. Harlan almost beat them in the 1999 finals, and I saw an average Cawood team win at Clay during the regular season in 98. The Harlan teams of 1994-96 were much better. The 95 team made it to the state semifinals and had three all-staters.

As a unit, the 1960-1961 Ashland team may well be the best to ever play in Kentucky. They featured five D-1 players (Conley, Sergent, Hilton, Cram, and Smith). The two top reserves (Sexton and Daniels) would have started for most any other team in the state. The coach, Bob Wright, was outstanding.

That is true. I had forgotten about those teams with Thomas, Lester, Cox, etc. They would give that Clay Co. team a good run.

1st REgion hasn't had a state winner in some time but in the last 30 years I would have to go with the 1983 Carlisle County team that went 40-4 and lost 35-33 in 3 OT to Lexington Henry Clay.

Their 4 loses that year were to:

Baltimore Dunbar who had Reggie Lewis, David Wingate and Mugsy Bouges in the finals of the King of the Bluegrass. they lost 65-48 and it was the closet any team had been to them. they were down single digits with about 4-5 minutes to go and Mugsy then went into his own stall game.

Lou. Male- who had Winston Bennett, lost to them in the LIT semis

Lou. Ballard- lost to them in the consolation game of the LIT with the starters on the bench most of the game

Lex. Henry Clay- in the state finals.

Here are some contenders in the 10th Region, the one's I've seen or been told about.

1. 2003 Mason Co.-Lofton and Company and the pieces fell into place!

2. 1948 Maysville-Coach Jones and Calvert & Cooke and the rest.

3. 2004 Mason Co.-Lofton & Co. come up a little short, but still a good run.

4. 1984 Bourbon Co.-Coach Day and the Colonels one of the best also.

5. 1972 Maysville-Coach Creamer, Walker, Smith, Turner and a Final 4 appearance with a big upset of Louisville Central in the quaterfinals!

6. 1936 Brooksville-Old timers have told me they had a great team.

7. 1981 Mason Co.-Coach Feldhaus starts the run to Rupp with no stars and a total team concept.

8. 1975 Bath Co.-Bruce Jones and Wildcats, a very solid starting 5.

9. 1968 Clark Co.-Lynn Hopewell and Larry Gay led this stong Cardinal Team.

10. 1970 Paris-Coach Redwine and Big Bill Gaines lead a seldom mentioned but

very good Paris team.

I know I have left out some very good Harrison Co. teams of the 60's and 70's and some very good Clark Co. teams of the 80's that caused my beloved Royals some major problems. Also to all 10th Region fans please refresh my old memory if I have inadvertently left off anybody due to space restraints.

As good a run as any team in Kentucky has ever had. They won the region I believe 7 straight years and appeared in 3 finals. The team that lost in Richie's senior year was better than the team that won the sweet sixteen. Same kids but a year older. The team that didn't go to the finals lost to the champs,Pulaski in a close game. Shannon Hoskins also led a team to a game on Saturday morning during this time frame. Bobby Keith could take yours and beat his or vice versa.

They could be the best "TEAM" that I can remember seeing play. They had no outstanding talent in as far as college level talent of the five starters Tyler started for 4yrs, at Transy, Henley played 2yrs. of basketball & baseball @ Southeastern Illinois JC, Hall went to SEMO only to leave after 1 season to come back to Paducah CC, Rambo became an accountant, and York became a Funeral Director/Embalmer. The only reserve that played any college ball was a freshman reserve who never played until the games were never in doubt. All this team was, was simply a bunch of hard nosed kids who bought into their coach's system. each new their roles, and executed their ability to its fullest potiental. A true Kentucky story of small town kids who made the most of their opportunity and were even featured on the cover of USA Today that year. There probably won't be another KY team to win 40 games due to KHSAA restrictions but that was a magical season for the tiny little county of Carlisle.
