June 14, 200719 yr and says that his Spurs are better than the great Laker and Celtic teams of the '80's. While I'm not sure that I agree with him (because I didn't watch must basketball in the 1980's (because I wasn't born)), he says some fairly intelligent stuff in the article. http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Au.clUTdAYYCS.eQ.chaSXQ5nYcB?slug=aw-horry061307&prov=yhoo&type=lgns Are these Spurs, and the Lakers with Kobe/Shaq, better than the Larry Bird Celtics and Magic Johnson Lakers?
June 14, 200719 yr Author Not even close IMO.... You think today's Spurs and Lakers are that much better that it isn't even worth a debate!??!?!?! P.S. Which smiley is the sarcastic one?
June 14, 200719 yr The Celtics had Bird, McHale, Parrish, THree HOF along with DJ and Ainge. The lakers had Magic, Kareem, Worthy, three HOF Not even close.
June 14, 200719 yr Author The argument is that those players (some of them) wouldn't be HOF's in today's league. Not that I agree with it.
June 14, 200719 yr Those Celtic and Laker teams (and I will throw in the Erving/Malone 76ers) would have wiped the floor with the aforementioned teams and Jordan's Bulls.
June 14, 200719 yr The Celtics had Bird, McHale, Parrish, THree HOF along with DJ and Ainge. The lakers had Magic, Kareem, Worthy, three HOF Not even close. The Lakers also had McAdoo and Cooper. Nixon and Wilkes weren't bad either
June 14, 200719 yr The argument that some of those guys wouldn't have been HOF guys is just plain crazy because its not like they are fringe HOF guys, they are top 50 NBA players...... Duncan might be the most overrated great player in NBA history. I get tired of people saying he is underrated and that fans should appreciate him more. He is good and a top 5-8 PF of all-time but he is not in the top 10 players of all-time, maybe not top 20....
June 14, 200719 yr The Lakers also had McAdoo and Cooper. Nixon and Wilkes weren't bad either :thumb: Don't forget Kurt Rambis
June 14, 200719 yr Those Celtic and Laker teams (and I will throw in the Erving/Malone 76ers) would have wiped the floor with the aforementioned teams and Jordan's Bulls. Jordan's Bulls? If I recall, Jordan wiped the floor with the Lakers in '91 and that wasn't even the best of Jordan's teams. Lets put the lineups up. Bulls '96-'97 Lakers '86-'87 PG Ron Harper Magic Johnson SG Michael Jordan Byron Scott SF Scottie Pippen James Worthy PF Dennis Rodman AC Green C Luc Longley Kareem Abdul-Jabaar Bench: Steve Kerr Kurt Rambis Tony Kukoc Michaell Thompson Bill Wennington Michael Cooper The Triangle offense v. Showtime Magic would not enjoy the height advantage that he normally held over oppossing PGs as Harper was a very athletic 6'6" Scott v. Jordan would have been entertaining b/c both were exceptional athletes, but nobody ever performed better in the finals than Jordan. Worthy v. Pippen is the best match-up out of the bunch as Worthy would have taken in the post and would have needed a ton of help on D against Pippen. Rodman v. Green. If ever there were two total opposites playing against one another. The virgin v. whatever you want to call Rodman. Chastity v. Excess. Not many pts. scored between the two, but there would have been plenty of rebounds, hustle, and off the ball antics. Longley v. Kareem. Lord help Longley. He may have presented enough size to affect Kareem's ability to post and shoot comfortably over the 7'2 Longley, but Kareem is Kareem and that is a small chance. I think that they match up very well against each other and no way would one demolish the other. People don't want to give present day teams their due, but they have talent. If you think that DJ or Magic, or Byron could consistently stop Parker from penetrating, then you are blinded by the Glory Days. Mchale v. Duncan??? Bird being kneed by Bowen. Ginobili v. Ainge. The Chief v. the Argentine guy??? Things look even to me.

June 14, 200719 yr :thumb: Don't forget Kurt Rambis I always thought he was one of the Hanson Brothers.
June 14, 200719 yr  Name 5 better PFs in NBA history??? I can't. I can probably name 2-3 but not 5. The PF is a weird position. What exactly do they do different than a center, except score and step out farther?
June 14, 200719 yr The fact that European's keep joining the league and being huge contributors really supports Horry's words. The talent in the NBA is way up top to bottom. However, the teams were a lot more top heavy in the 90's and before the 90's. The Laker teams and Celtic teams could have played with the Spurs (not sure who would win). Duncan is hands down better than Parish, but the Jabbar match-up would be very interesting. I think the Jordan teams would have beat the Spurs.
