Acknowledging Mr. Maile's age and all of the opportunity he has had to coach over the years you would think he would let the young guys have their opportunities.

 

Why? If he can still coach and likes to do it and if he brings value, why walk away?

 

I am not disrespecting Mr. Maile, he is a fine person, but what if every grand parent wanted to coach their grandson or daughter?

 

How many of those are qualified and have the resume?

My understanding of all of this is when Kevin Listerman came to CovCath was that he was hired by the school to teach, which neither Schrand or Maile do. Most schools give the first shot to teachers to coach not para professionals. So if Schrand and Maile want to coach they should also teach IMO.

 

Sounds like the administration gave into the pressure of the alumni who were threatening to cut back on donations. I am sure Kevin is very heavy hearted since he didn't think he would be treated by the people of the school he loves the way he and his father have been.

 

Talk about well traveled.....Dick Maile. Nice man but lets see Holy Cross, Notre Dame, CovCath, back to one of those then back to the other etc. I am sure it is all about coaching his grandson at this point.

 

Mike Listerman could have been making a lot more money other places and has been very loyal to CovCath as a teacher first and an assitant for a long, long time and now as the head coach. CovCath is fortunate to have people like him. See the football job.

 

Good luck to Kevin in his job at Colerain. He will do well.

 

Someone sounds biased......and also way, way off on this one.

 

Kevin Listerman did not leave because of "administrative pressure". He was very well-liked at CovCath. There are other reasons.

 

You are also off on Coach Maile, letting someone younger take the job is illogical. If he enjoys it and can help, why wouldn't he? Also, just cause he isn't a teacher does not mean that he has had a profound effect on his players, beyond the court.

 

I can understand your talk about loyalty, but look at the football job. Rodenburg may have been at CCH for two years, but he was far, far more successful then the basketball program.

 

Kevin Listerman will succeed at Colerain, because he is a great coach with great work ethic. Hopefully someday he will be back at CovCath.

Mr. Maile made a career choice many years ago to not teach. If the person teaches at the school then IMO they should be the first person to have the opportunity to coach. If Mr. Maile can contribute I think that is fantastic but the head coach is ultimately responsible for the program and gets to make the decisions. This would go for Coach Schrand as well or any other para professional at any other school not just CovCath.

Mr. Maile was also on Ken Shields staff...I believe about the time Dickie was playing. And I believe Mr. Listerman was there also. And about a previous post on Grand-dads coaching only for their son/g-sons...go for it...IF you carry the pedigree Mr. Maile does!

Odd? Not really, except to the extent that some prior posts seem to feel that was a big deal with Listerman and CCH...seems inconsistent at least. Relative to some of the other prior posts...

 

Kevin was treated wonderfully and is greatly appreciated! No one wanted him to leave!

 

Maile may be a grandparent, but he has been a player and coach for some 50 years as a non grandparent...his credentials rival any full time teacher you can find, but better yet, he asks for no money and wants only for his head coach to succeed! Ask the hundreds of kids who have played for him their opinion...

 

Schrand too has the credentials and disposition to be nothing but an asset; again, ask any of his players...

 

Coach L certainly has every right and responsiblity to name his own staff, that is not in question; the curiousity comes from the double talk and the urgent need to eliminate two pretty good assistants so that the 'in house' guy could come in...even more confusing is why couldn't he have both? Further, the quick departure of the urgent new guy...then the very speedy hiring of a another new guy that fits neither of the previously stated necessary credentials.

 

I don't care if it's Maile / Schrand or two other guys with similar resumes ....the entire episode makes no sense?

 

Add that to the fact that I still haven't found anyone who played for him and/or had a son play for him that really stands behind him!?!? That speaks volumes to me! If you're out there...step up! If you don't fit one of those criteria, you opinion is welcomed but not terribly helpful or insightful imo...

Great post. As for the last part, the farther you get from the program, the more support you find, i.e., all the "Best coaches in the state" threads, see who the NKY people put. but the high regard for CCH in the Lexington/Louisville area.

Andy Listerman has been the Athletic Director at Lexington Catholic the last couple of years. He has been teaching at LexCath for the last 4-5 years. This is another interesting move by the Listermans. This isn't even a lateral move to Elder. AD at one of the best HS in the state leaving to become a teacher??? WHAT?

 

Is he trying to become the next AD at Elder? Then from there maybe he'll hire his dad or brother as the next BBALL coach at Elder. I can see it already.
