HSsportsfan14 Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 My family and I are heading out to Las Vegas June 8th. I've been there once before, but didn't get to sight see as much as I would have liked because I was there for a conference. Vegas will be new to most everyone in my group, so I'm looking for recommendations about the best things to see and do while in the Vegas area. Can you help?
jahearme Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 I'll be there June 5-7. We have been there before. I really enjoyed Hoover Dam and old downtown. The seafood buffet at Rio is really good as well!
Sportz Addict Posted May 26, 2007 Posted May 26, 2007 Really depends on the ages of your kids. When I was there it lived up to its party rep. But I was with friends. I am sure you can find family activities. I saw a lot of families there. If you go to like lasvegas.com or google in vegas activities, you should find a lot.
UKMustangFan Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 When I was out there, we went to Hoover Dam, which was really neat, and also saw Red Rock Canyon. By far the coolest "nature" spot I've ever been. As far as sight-seeing goes, just walking through the hotels is quite an experience in its own right. Depending on the ages of the kids, the Luxor, Excalibur, and Circus Circus may be something they enjoy.
HSsportsfan14 Posted May 27, 2007 Author Posted May 27, 2007 A couple of references were made to having kids on the vacation. Actually, we're all adults, so we won't be needing to find any kid-friendly spots. I definitely want to check out the canyon while I'm there this time. Any suggestions on whether it's better to rent a car and make a do-it-yourself day-trip out of it or go through one of the tour agencies?
kygirl Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 I've done it both ways & my recommendation is to go through one of the tour agencies. A fun thing to do is go hotel hopping--the paintings at the Bellagio, The Venetian has great restaurants and makes you feel like your in Venice, MGM Grand(excellent spa & good shows), Cesear's Palace(good shows), New York,New York(fun shops). Check out Bally's especially if you are into sports. The Hard Rock Hotel is a must see if you're into music....have fun!!!!
NEERFAN Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 If you go to the dam and you like to get on the water head down to the Lake Mead marina, they rent jet skis and it's pretty inexpensive. They give you a map and it only takes about 10 minutes to get to the dam. I would love to take a copter over the canyon, that's next on my list. I would recommend a rental car, you can get them cheap and it's not bad driving as long as you avoid the strip during peak times. If you like coasters take a ride down I-15 to Primm, they have one of the top coasters in the US plus there is a outlet mall right next to it, so you can do a bit of discount shopping.

I can't help you with Hoover Dam, but the above post is a good start for some hotel hopping. :thumb: I'd invest the $25 or so for a three-day monorail pass, depending on where you are staying. Gets you from one side of the strip to the other in a matter of minutes. Other hotels you have to see, Wynn, the Luxor, and the Mirage. Cool stuff on the strip that costs you a bit of cash; a ride to the top of the Eifel Tower in the Paris, the Roller Coasters at New York, New York. Coasters at the top of the Stratosphere. Cool free stuff includes the Bellagio water show, and theTreasure Island battle reanactment. I think the Rio does a free show nightly as well, but it's a bit off the strip. The area across the street from Ceaser's is a good hangout spot if your not gambling at night. Live Music, and outdoor Jimmy Buffett's to people watch, and other bar, music areas all within a football field of each other. Have fun.
HOMELESS CAMEL Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 Doug Stanhope talks about avoiding Van Buren street in Las Vegas on his first comedy cd. Fun story that is NOT BGP appropriate, but if you have heard the cd, it's hilarious.
theguru Posted May 27, 2007 Posted May 27, 2007 Lots of good ideas. We rented a car once and did Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon in the same day. I second the motion for the seafood buffet at Rio. It is very expensive and worth every penny. Rio also has another buffet with foods from many places around the world that is excellent too. The pool at Rio is also nice. I love the outdoor music across from Caesars Palace. The music is at Harrah's in what they call the Carnival Court. We don't gamble much, if any at all. One thing I want to do this time around in Vegas is see Danny Gans. The jet skis sound cool too. How much were they neer?
NEERFAN Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 I've done the skis twice and I believe $55 bucks for an hour, not a bad price at all......Unless you go out alone like I did and the ski breaks down and it takes 45 minutes to get back at idle speed.
bellalumni40 Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 We'll have to bring this back up later. I will probably be going to Vegas in November for a Pro-Am pretty much for free. I've never been past the central time zone and am really looking forward to it.
RedBirdCards23 Posted May 28, 2007 Posted May 28, 2007 Circus Circus! Ride the New York New York Rollar Coaster, best one I've ever road. If you're not eating fancy, eat at the Golden Coast, they have the best buffet I've ever eaten at. Be sure to check out the strip. Hoover Dam is really great, but really hot, it was 120 there when I went. I forget which Casino it was, but it's where the cieling is a big screen show, like jets and such...That's very interesting.
