Any idea how many schools use public fields? I know NCC, Highlands and Ludlow do.

 

I'm not sure, but you can add Holmes, Holy Cross, and Brossart (at least back in my days). I don't think Newport owns their field. Also, I'm not sure about Villa. When Tom Braun was redone, I don't know if Villa took over ownership or not.

Bellevue has one of the best fields in Northern Ky. as the school has put a tremenous amount of time in to it. It is wonderful! Unfortunately they have not done this amount of work to other fields in the district

 

 

Let's make sure to clarify this one. The SCHOOL hasn't put one minute of time or 1 cent of money into the Bellevue Baseball Field at the Vets. There is no money for that purpose and the field doesn't belong to the school district in any way. The BASEBALL TEAM and their coaches, along with help from some members of the Bellevue Vets, put ALL the time, money and effort into upgrading that field. And while I'd never put it in the same area code with the best fields in this region, it definitely IS far better than it has ever been thanks to those very people I mentioned. Athletic facilities are not a high priority when you are a small independent district so you learn quickly to make the best of wht you've got.

The nuns own the land and lease the field to the City for $1 per year. The City (Wayne and Tim Reese) takes care and pride in that field. The Villa coaches (Meier and Ringo in particular and now Welte) and players contribute as well. Ultimately, it was a great team effort between public and private working together for the betterment of the community.

Brossart's field is actually owned by St. Mary's (certainly not public) I believe, although the BB personnel put a lot of time in the maintenence. It's really improved a lot the last year or two, especially the grass infield, and they lengthened the fences. I'm another that see's nothing wrong with Campbell County's field. Although I've not played on it, it seems like a high quality facility!!

Maybe the new Boone County high school going in on Longbranch Rd will be a showcase. Not holding my breath.

You know, I just saw Beechwood's field about a week ago and aside from the fact that it is a skinned infield, the surface was very nice to play on. The outfield grass is very lush and well kept and there was a temporary fence running the length of right and right-center fields. Yes, foul territory is small and there are no side fences on the right field side, but I've seen and played on much much worse.

So very true.... i know for a fact that Coach Sanders does alot to keep this field nice... He is one heckuva of a coach and is turning the Bellevue program around quick....

Absolutely. I was playing on that field a hundred years ago against you.

 

 

And when I pitched there against a Ludlow team, I'd walk just about every left handed hitter they had because of the short right field. However in my day it was a real nice field to play on. Lots of people attended games back in the early 70's.

The Florence Freedom facility is pretty sweet for high school games. Hope they can squeeze even more games in there in the future.

I was talking to Chris Hook tonight and he said that the Freedom doesn't charge the high schools to use their facility. Freedom keeps the gate and concessions in order to make it free to the schools. Obviously when they draw 1200 people, such as they did for the Boone-Ryle game, they do quite well, but as long as they feel the game will draw a few hundred people and enough to offset their operating costs they are willing to work with the schools. I can't imagine any reason why a high school would not want to give their players a chance to play in such a venue. Champion Window Field is a first-rate facility. BTW, the Freedom also has a program worked out to make the field available to summer teams to play.

All 3 Boone Co fields are decent but not above average.

 

IMO St henry has the best field with Meinken being second behind it. Those are the only two fields who have mounds that resemble a major league mound and not just a hill and the infield/outfield are pretty decent size. Scott has a pretty nice field as well, especially with the addition of the lights.

 

Ludlow and Dayton are two of the worst fields to play at. No grass and the fences are uneven.

Hands down Silver Grove has the worst field. There is a tree in play in right field, straight down the line in right is about 200, huge dirt mound in center field, its like a backyard game... if you hit it on top of the pavillion its a homerun, if it goes through it then its a double. I also like the playground in left center, but the best part is the artificial mound. I think they should have played there games at Pendry like they did in the past, i wonder why they moved back to the old field?

I was just naming out schools that don't own their own field. I didn't necessarily mean they were using public fields.

The only way to make Beechwoods field work is to push it down the right field line more. This will give more room on the left field side for additional seating, however, room behind the backstop will still be sparce. They just don't seem to have enough room back there to do much, unless they make some drastic changes. They'd also have to remove the softball field. I was just back there Tuesday night for baseball practice and the field definitely looks better now than when I played on it.
