"Quality" of fields in NKY

Featured Replies

Is anyone else surprised/disappointed in the overall quality of high school fields in NKY? Obviously, St. Henry has the premier field, but who has the next best venue? Personally, I like Meiken Field, though I haven't seen it this season. Some of the fields are just downright terrible and are very poorly maintained. Sure makes you wish there was a centrally-located tournament baseball park complex that had a few 60'-90' fields that several teams could make use of. Field quality probably not the most important issue in the world - baseball is baseball whether it's played at GABP or in a parking lot - but I just find it interesting that the overall quality of the NKY high school fields (my opinion here) is so poor.

Scotts field isnt shabby, Dixie's Field will be up there with St. Henry's when it gets done, all they need is grass, that complex is real nice.

I'd agree with that sentiment. In comparison to fields in the Lexington, Louisville, or Ohio area......NKY fields are by far the worst. I personally don't care for the field at Meiken. Aside from St. Henry, here are some of the fields that are "decent" IMO........Scott, NCC, and well.......that's about it.

In the "not decent but not bad category"

Ryle

Boone Co.

CovCath

Brossart

Holmes/Holy Cross

Simon Kenton

Villa

Bellevue(improving at least)

Dixie

Beechwood

Just plain bad

Lloyd

Dayton

Ludlow

Conner

I'm sure I forgot a few, but those are just off the top of my head.

Dixies field right now is absloutly terrible, and i wouldnt want to play a varsity game ever at Beechwood, Next year, Dixie will have one of the top fields around here. Conner's field is better than both of these fields. iMO

Honestly, now that I think about it I may agree. Still, we're separating bad from worst at best IMO. The dirt infield really needs to become a thing of the past in NKY.

I completly agree, I was just giving my two cents, but yes it is sepreating bad from worst, I always liked the reactions of my team mates when we played down south and played on a real baseball field, priceless.

Dont forget about Newport's field as well.... need grass in the infield

i disagree with the take on NCC's field being even a decent one. there is a giant ridge that goes from first to second and the outfield is as choppy and non-level as i've seen.

Frankforts field is in tremendous shape compared to last year. The coaches must have put in the rake and shovel time on that this year.

Campbell County is very nice and in good shape.

Gallatin County is playing their first full year on their new field. Many who have come to Warsaw have commented on how nice the field and the facilities are. I would compare to St. Henry.

Gallatin County is indeed a nice field, though not in St. Henry's league. I didn't want to rag on any one field specifically (which, of course, now I am going to do), but Beechwood's field is absolutely terrible and the single worst place I can think of from which to watch a game. It is hard to believe that a program of that quality plays on a field like that. I think Conner's field has improved much, though there's little they can do about the visitor's dugout being halfway down the right field line. Villa has the makings to be a nice place, but they need to do away with the mulch covering some of foul territory and replace it with crushed brick. Not sure who (if anyone) uses the large field at Covington FOP, but it's a pretty decent field (or at least it was last year).

Schools generally don't have the staff (or money) to upkeep the fields to the level they should be. It is important for the coaches/AD's to get the parents involved - something that I don't believe happens at most schools.

Camels have one of the best fields in NKY.

Highlands field is horrible......It is a shame that they have to play on such a crappy field.

I understand Beechwood is in the process of looking into a significant upgrade to their field.

I believe that Holy Cross and Holmes JV teams use the Covington FOP Field.

The one place that is worse than Beechwood, is playing a game at Silver Grove H.S Skinned infield, they use a portable mound, the backstop extends overhead about 3 feet infront of home plate. And then throw in the number of people that feel it is their right to just walk through the outfield to get from one side to the other. I know that during the Silver Grove and Beechwood game, the umpires had to stop the game I think 3 times because of people walking through the outfield. It would have been a major upgrade to play that game at Beechwood.
