***Does anyone remember the days when a bowl game that had a sponser was pretty darn rare? My goodness. How many Division 1A schools are? You are essentially rewarding a number of teams for being mediocre. CONGRATS!

Isn't this the same amount of bowl games as last year?

I think so, I just saw the article and figured I would post it here. I'm sure a majority of people agree there are WAY, WAY too many bowl games.

The increase is bc Big Name companies are seeing how much advertising it can do for them and how much revenue the games bring in. In the end it's all about that cheddar.

The same number of teams who fight in out in March Madness looks to be battling it out on the gridiron toward the end of the year (minus one of course). Thirty two bowl games really is a little too much IMO, and most definately takes away from the prestige playing in a bowl game once had. Now, if you go .500 on the season your probably going somewhere, even if it is the "We Are Friends of Auto Mechanics Lugwrench Bowl" or something like that. I mean seriously its almost getting that bad, and the reason why it has gotten this bad is because it is becoming more less and less about football and more and more about the money. The NCAA is getting paid, the Universities are getting paid, and hundreds of sponsors are diving at the NCAA's feet just trying to get into the mix and have their name out there, regardless of cost. Pretty soon almost all D-1 schools will have a bowl game. But I guess with all that said, it is still kind of a double edge sword. I love all the extra foobtall, I love all the matchups, but still it just doesn't seem like the prestige is in it anymore. Unless your team is playing in the BCS or one of maybe five other bowls in which are actually held in high regard, then no one really cares if they win or lose, the fans, players, and sometimes even the coaches. A good example is Clemson saying they weren't prepared to play UK because they were basically pouting because they didn't get the game they wanted. Some players even went on to say that they didn't even care if they won/lost and didn't give anywhere close to a 100% effort. Like said the prestige of being in a bowl is slowly slipping away, with the only upside being teams like Kentucky, who have been bowl poor for several years, and then finally put together a good enough season ro land one. This brings a certain deal of presige and pride for as a Cat fan I know I was very satisfied with the outcome even if it was the Music City Bowl. So with all that said, all I am trying to say really is for the most part the NCAA is only hurting football instead of helping, and instead of adding games , they need to trim a few. Not only would this make the season more competitive it would also give back the feel to those not playing in the BCS that their game really does mean something.

Doesn't bother me a bit. I'm all for it.

Sure, its not as prestigious as it once was, but who cares? Everyone knows the BCS bowls (and maybe a couple others) are what really matter. So if UK or Vandy throws a good year together and gets to play in the Qdoba Burrito Bowl, then I'm all for it.

To me there is no downside other than a perceived loss of prestige for the big bowls.

This fits right into my playoff scenario top 32 teams takes 32 bowl games and 5 weeks to play. That way all bowl games are important.

San Diego County Credit Union

Can we make a rule that you have to least get some sort of national sponsor? At this point I think Larry's Lawn Mower Emporium and Fine Dining could get a bowl game sponsorship.

Here is a breakdown of percentage of participants in NCAA football and basketball postseasons:

Football

64 out of 119 participate in the postseason, which is 53.7%

Basketball

Counting the NCAA Tournament and National Invitational Tournament

97 out of 336 participate in the postseason, which is 28.8%

I was thinking the same thing when I saw it, soon enough we are going to see Big Ed's Truck/Tow/Barbershop/Grocery Mart Bowl. lol

To SportsFan41, I know that it's all about money at the end of the day and until people stop supporting this crap, there won't be a playoff anytime soon.

Personally I think along with a winning record you should also have a winning or even record in your conference to go to a bowl. That would cut down the number of teams a good deal, and make all teams deserving..

If the NCAA wanted to regulate and even out both sports (although the NCAA has no control over football post-season), they would need a 34-team playoff in football. If they wanted equality in the other direction, they would have a 180-team basketball playoff!

I think that would be a good plan. But the NCAA doesn't really take a stand on bowl games, so I can't imagine it happening any time soon.

Again, I am not opposed to a college football playoff, but I would want it limited to either 4 teams or at the most 8. I do not want March Madness in football. People can say what they want, but a portion of the regular season would be somewhat dilluted with a lot of teams in a college football playoff.

In basketball, I would argue that every team actually gets into the tournament because of conference tournaments that take place before the "Big Dance."
