Billy Clyde Gillispie (born November 7, 1959, in Abilene, Texas[3]) is an American basketball coach and is the head men's Basketball coach at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. Though his last name is spelled unconventionally, it is pronounced exactly the same as the more common "Gillespie." Was Kentucky's 3rd choice as a replacement for Tubby Smith after being rebuffed by current University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan and Texas' Rick Barnes. Agreed to extension with A&M last week but did not sign the extension before the Kentucky offer was made, thus enabling him to accept the Kentucky offer with the permission of Texas A&M. After leading both UTEP and Texas A&M to postseason appearances one year after extraordinarily weak seasons, Gillispie became the only college basketball coach to be in charge of the NCAA program with the biggest turnaround in two consecutive seasons. An excellent recruiter, Gillispie has put together four straight top-25 recruiting classes. April 6, 200719 yr ^^I'm not convinced he wasn't the #2 choice.....I know the talking heads have said it was Donovan, Barnes, and THEN Gillispie, but I doubt it would have been done so quickly if he wasn't #2.
April 6, 200719 yr No, it's not "official" but a press conference is scheduled. I would say official, people made it official yesterday when Billy D said there was a presser yesterday for his stay...so it is officially official...

Yes, and IMO they would....Schools are much more likely to do so in this day and age due to the negative impact it could have on future recruiting if they chose otherwise. It also doesn't hurt that it's a BigXII school and an SEC school....

Do you really want all the UK haters, and there are many thousands, to say UK couldn't get "Billy D" so they settled a few notches lower for "Billy G"? It is no big deal in a world where people ar starving but I would hope UK could be a little more original. "Dickie V", "Coach K", "Billy D", etc. Surely, the great tradition at UK deserves better.

Why would that matter? As far as "quickly" goes, they moved from Donovan to Barnes within hours. Why couldn't they go from Barnes to Gillispie as "quickly"?
April 6, 200719 yr A&M would have to release him from his LOI, right? Yes, But that doesn't seem to be a problem here with the NLI. So he won't have to sit a year and lose a year.
