Best Coach in the State?

Featured Replies

You have to also give credit to whoever worked with these kids prior to getting to high school. I doubt Walls or Hundley were projects when they showed up as Freshman at Scott Co.

Many parents, siblings, and AAU coaches get kids started teaching proper fundamentals as early as 2nd and 3rd grade.

The best coaches in my opinion make overachievers out of their players, but talent definately can also help make the coach.

I agree - and I gave credit to other coaches in the program. Since there is only one high school in SC we are all in the same program. There are great feeder programs here and the youngest AAU league starts at 6U (that's 6months and under) :D A lot of that excitement stems from the success and dedication of Coach Hicks... It all goes together.

Who is belittling Billy Hicks' ability as a coach? Certainly not me ...

Your affinity for Scott County's program has placed a big chip on your shoulder. You really don't want to get into this discussion, do you? ;)

The blanket statement "A lot of coaches wish they had the talent you guys have..." with no mention of how he guides and focuses that talent seems a bit backhanded to me. It seemed to imply that there are a lot of coaches who could do what Coach Hicks does - like his influence on this team was insignificant. Maybe I just took the post wrong.

I like how you keep us informed of things going on out west - I have some family in Paducah - but this isn't the first cold post regarding my beloved Cards... Again, maybe I took those posts wrong too...

Some of Hicks basketball philophies are:

* Basketball is meant to be played 84 feet, baseline to baseline, not half court. Kids enjoy playing this style and will play harder.

* Man to man developes players. Zone defenses teach kids to take breaks on defense.

* Xs and 0s and strategy is over-rated. Individual day to day player development is the key to program building and long-term winning.

* Repetition is the key to improvement. His players do the same ball handling and shooting drills each day that the 6th graders in the system do each day.

* Winning coaching is 1% game coaching and 99% practice coaching.

* Never blame an opposing coach for running the score up on you. If the score gets ran up on you, its your fault.

* Never intentionally run the score up on anyone. It will come back to haunt you. If your reserves run it up that's OK.

One of my favorite Coach Hicks philosophy is "Take winning and do good things with it. Take losing and learn from it."

Another one is: There is never a situation where a lose is better than a win.

Billy Hicks, Rodney Woods, Mike Deaton

All former Redhound coaches. You are such a homer, Gomer.:D;)

Might as well throw your coach P. in there too.

Bobby Keith as long as he is still alive. Billy Hicks is the best active coach. He had good teams at Corbin. He has put togeather his second great team at Scott County. They may well win the state championship next year. He is always competitive. The Jones years they were special also.

More than his second great team. Hicks has went to 5 final fours and three championship games in the last 10 years.

My "your guys" comment was referring to your list of top coaches ... many of whom have very good talent to work with on a regular basis.

Yes, I suspect you took that post wrong.

As for the others ... cold? Not really, but at the same time, I'm never very shy about expressing an opinion. ;)

Good players, year after year makes the well noted coaches. I've seen a lot of top teams play this year and the teams that impressed me as being well coached were Cov Cath and Scott HS. It seemed they could adjust to any situation. There's a lot of good coaches in the state but most fans base their opinion on who wins the big game or who makes it to the state and that's not right.

Is Coach Jay Fite mentioned anywhere? He did a great job at Bracken Co this season.

I agree, Jay is a very good young coach and a great person.:ylsuper:

Interesting that virtually everyone mentioned on here coaches at a very large school, with a wealth of talent year after year?? Does talent really make the coach??

Getting ready to post the same thing.

I had an administrator once that told me as a coach, can't make chicken salad from chicken poop.

I like that quote but did he really use the word poop.

But a great coach can come in and BUILD a heck of a chicken salad sandwich in a couple or three years.
