March 23, 200719 yr Doyel is usually right but I think hes off with this IMO. He's not completely off. Some things I disagree with, but not all. I do not think Tubby will completely flop...but I do think he will have trouble recruiting.
March 23, 200719 yr I've always had a great deal of respect for Tubby. But his stubborn unwillingness to can the laggards on his staff was his undoing. Those guys were clowns w/re to recruiting. I heard from a few reputable sources today that an ultimatim was laid down, and Tubby again said "no thanks, I'll keep these guys." IMO, this shortsighted value of loyalty over competence Tubby displayed is very GWB-esque. And on another note: What's Doyel got against Kennesaw State??????

March 23, 200719 yr It's funny how we all think Doyle is a great guy when he calls out Coach K on the Laetner stomping, but when he writes a truthful although one-sided article on Tubby he is some sort of idiot journalist. I agree with all of you that think Doyle is a jerk, but the man tells the harsh truth that many of us know but won't say.

March 23, 200719 yr Tubby will be able to recruit the players that he needs to win instead of trying to appeal to an unrealistic fan base that wants their cake and eat it too. He will be able to get the Chuck Hayes and Erik Daniels of their world instead of appealing to the craziness of UK basketball and get the MCD's AA like Morris, Crawford, Rondo and Bradley that come don't want to do the fundamentals and underachieves. I would be surprised to see UK and Minnesota have comparable records at the end of next season.
March 23, 200719 yr Doyel was WRONG about one thing gametime...Tubby Smith will NOT "flop" at the University of Minnesota. He will flourish. Minnesota will be in the sweet 16, and thats saying ALOT for Minnesota, within the next 4 years.

You are exactly right, he was told to makes changes after last season and did not, that's why Mitch was upset with him this year- coupled with the season results and less than good recruits for next year and that sealed thedeal. Tubby chose to leave rather than dump his asst. coaches which would have pointed the blame at them. He is a class guy and took the high road.

March 23, 200719 yr or team. I felt that this team had the components to make a run but too many of the key players faded in big games or at crucial moments. Most of those players were the ones brought in to feed the fans need for a top 5 recruiting class. And was thoroughly disappointed that this team did not finish in the top 10 and at least an Elite 8 appearance.
March 23, 200719 yr I really like Tubby but this article isnt far off. Lets face it he was great at Tulsa and Georgia because seasons like this one would be some of their better ones. He does better at the smaller stage and will do fine with his new school. I agree with Doyel. Good at smaller schools and short amounts of time when some of his shortcomings dont show as much such as recruiting
