SouthernSportsFan Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 When Pitino left Kentucky, he recommended that Donovan be his successor... that didn't happen. But, what if it did? Where would Kentucky be today, after the 96-97 runnerup team? A National Championship or two? Honest thoughts, please.
BigBlueFreak Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 My opinion would be that Donovan wouldn't live up to the expectations of half the UK fans. It's alway going to be half of the fans happy and the other half mad. It's never going to change, when Pitino was here half the people hated him the other half loved him until he wins a championship then everyone wanted on the wagon. Tubby comes in fans create a special statistical category just for him "10 loss Tubby". Coaching at UK is a no win situation unless you never lose, it's that simple. Until this past season, you could make a new category for Billy D too "1 and Done Donny" What makes everyone think Billy D wants to come to UK?

He is a good coach, great recruiter, and plays an exciting type of b-ball.
futurecoach Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 When Pitino left Kentucky, he recommended that Donovan be his successor... that didn't happen. But, what if it did? Where would Kentucky be today, after the 96-97 runnerup team? A National Championship or two? Honest thoughts, please. From everything I heard he recommened Tubby to be his succesor, so I dont know where that came from because this is the first I heard of this..
whodey Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 This is unbelievable... Its always something that someone brings up about wanting something or someone different. When Tubby recruited Rondo, Morris, Bradley, and Crawford a lot of people were supporting him. I was honestly very pleased and was not upset over not getting Lofton. 3 years later, Lofton is a stud and UK is where they are at today. The same recruits that came to Kentucky and got everyone excited, now has people giving up on Kentucky and Tubby. Also like Ive said all along, IMO Lofton would not have become as good of a player if he would have gone to UK. Tennesse gave him the oppurtunity to be the standout player. He may not have seen much playing time and wouldnt have taken as many shots at UK and he wouldn't have be came the player he is today. By the way, Im not saying that everyone has given up on UK.
UKMustangFan Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 From everything I heard he recommened Tubby to be his succesor, so I dont know where that came from because this is the first I heard of this.. You are correct. Pitino recommended Tubby for the job.
Original Rookie Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 He is a good coach, great recruiter, and plays an exciting type of b-ball. Up until last year nobody thought he could coach.
gametime Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Up until last year nobody thought he could coach. I did...
Oldbird Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Anyone know what Tubby vs. Donovan are head to head since he as been at Florida?
LSURock Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Anyone know what Tubby vs. Donovan are head to head since he as been at Florida? Useless stat IMO. Tubby should have a big edge against every team in the SEC. Otherwise why would UK have hired Tubby from UGA since he went o-fer against UK?
HammerTime Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 Up until last year nobody thought he could coach. I'm still not sure if he can. He can sure recruit which helps a lot. The jury is still out IMO.
BigBlueFreak Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 You are correct. Pitino recommended Tubby for the job. I don't even remember if Donovan applied for the job. Does anyone know? If he didn't apply then, why would he apply now that he has the Florida program turned around for the time beeing anyway.

BTW, in order for him to apply for the job, there has to be a coaching vacancy.....I just don't see that happening.
SouthernSportsFan Posted February 24, 2007 Author Posted February 24, 2007 Pitino recommended Donovan, and all the players supported the choice, but Newton decided they would "look" for a coach and then they hired Tubby. You can check some of the internet sites and there is stuff about it. When I get a spare minute, I will search it up and provide a link.
iPapi Posted February 24, 2007 Posted February 24, 2007 I guess this all boils down to "who would you rather have, Tubby or Billy D"? Give me Billy D and a Colt 45!!!
