2007 Mason County

I saw the field the other day, unbelieveable but Coach Buchanan has grass back on the field. Not only can he coach but he must carry around some magic Bermuda Grass seed?????????The last 2 games the field was a mudpit. I don't know about turf?????

Wow! The Coach has to maintain the field too? I'm glad the field is looking better, but man... since when did coaches have to become grounds keepers too? I know I heard somewhere that the board was going to buy turf for the field. That may have actually been a couple of years ago... :sssh: So maybe they're ready to move forward this year. Let's hope so.

I second that!:thumb:

A true class act.

And I'll second that too! Some programs have coaches, some have men of high standards, but not all are lucky enough to have a man that is both. Coach Buchanan is the total package.

Should have a big line and a very good quaterback,Running game should do well but im afraid there might not be much to pass it to .Overall a much easier schedule,I think we will do very good if we can find any recievers.

The line will be big with Ray Huron 260,Chris Temple 285,WileyBrace 250,the running game will be fine with Thompson and Pollitt, the passing game after watching the first passing scrimmiges will be Cox throwing mostly to Tolle and the backs . With Cox,Tolle and Brace leading the defense Mason should have a great year.

Agree with the above post. See my incredibly insightful post from February for more details.:D

The home schedule should be very competitive and entertaining - Boone County, West Carter, Campbell County, Russell and Fleming County. Mason's success will hinge on solid defense, controlling the ball on offense and the athleticism of Cox at QB.

By the way, nice to have you on the site!

As to the bolded part of your quote, I think Coach Buchanan rates very highly among his peers and anyone in the state who knows anything about high school football.

The rest of your message I agree with 110%.

I just read all the pleasant remarks regarding Coach Buchanan on BGP. Everyone seems to be right on the mark as to what I witnessed last evening. Saw Coach Buchanan in action last night at a 7 on 7 in N Ky. I remarked to my spousal unit as well as to my son that the head coach of Mason County had a lot of class. He was very congratulatory to the opposing team and he was full of encouragment to his squad throughout the 7 on 7. And yes, he has that southern Kentucky draw! Reminds me of a former coach that went on to finish his career in Harrison Co. many years ago.

The Royals starting and 2nd string QB seemed to struggle last evening. I was very surprised as I have heard of great expectations of Cox. Cox has great size, good speed - but had trouble with the touch pass and the deep ball finding its target. Trouble one wouldn't expect without a pass rush, blitzing LBs and Safety.

The defensive unit seemed to play much better. Cox seemed to be in great shape as he played the Safety spot throughout the eveing. The DBs played pretty well. Looks like Defense will the key this year for a sucessful campaign.

I hope the Royals can turn things around this Summer. It will be fun to watch their progress when they start playing real ball! Good Luck to a well respected Coach and to his team!

Cox will be fine in most situations if in trouble he will become a 6'3 220lb half back which makes for a great advantage for Mason , with coach Buchanan throwing shorter passes to his Te Tolle and running backs Thompson and Pollitt Mason will use their size and speed to there advantage and their defense with Brace,Huron,Tolle,Cox,Pollitt plus some of the younger players should be one of the top defensive units in the state.

watchout for Jeremy Thompson.. Hes been working real hard and he will have a breakout season this year!

ChiefSmoke,

Just curious to get your viewpoint on the new competition in 3A. You have traded Ashland, Johnson Central, Rockcastle County, and Bell County in your region for Russell, Belfry, Sheldon Clark, and well not much else. Though it appears as though the talent level will be equivalent or maybe even slightly downgraded than before, this region is hands down the toughest in 3A (The three mentioned teams in addition to Mason County all can be considered legit title contenders).

What do you feel will be the biggest adjustment the Royals will have to make?

What do you feel a young up-and-cming coach such as yourself can learn from coaching against legends the likes of Haywood at Belfry and McGlone at Russell?

Conversely to the last question, you also will have the chance potentially to coach against some great young coaches now, like Shawn Hager at Sheldon Clark (belfry alum and Jim Matney protege'). What do you look forward about those potential matchups?

On behalf of the folks here in Mason County, thank you for your kind words about Coach Buchanan. He is a class act both on and off the field. We in Maysville have seen that since his arrival and I for one am very glad that the rest of the state is getting to see this also.

He cares about his guys and works his tail off to get them in college. They might not go to D1 schools but they get a chance to get an education and continue to play football. In my opinion if a coach does that he is a winner no matter what the outcome is on Friday night.

Thanks again SS. If you ever get a chance to get down Maysville way on a Friday night please join us for some Royal football.

All the programs and coaches you mentioned, in both the old and new 3A are very strong. Thanks for the "young" label- haven't heard that in a while. ;)

We know we will have to play very good football to earn the opportunity to play the programs you mentioned in November. For us, it is first things first. Monday we have alot of work to do to improve. As the season approaches, we will focus on our first game and getting better each day.

I am not directly answering your question, and often I choose not to answer questions in this way. But, hopefully my response will give you some idea of where we are right now.

I appreciate the kind words in this thread. One thing I am good at is surrounding myself with good people- like our players and staff. Those guys always make me look good. That's also the same reason we chose to do the two passing scrimmages with Highlands and Coach Mueller- we are working with good people who will make us better.

Good luck Mason Co., except for the game at Lex. Cath. against Paris!:D
