I know that I am new here, but I have been reading this board for some time, and I enjoy reading the stories from around the state. Here is what I would like to discuss: What is your opinion of the KHSAA, and the job they are doing as an organization? I am looking for solid discussion/opinion, rather than one-liners or quick shots. What do you like about them/think they do well? What don't you like about them/think they do poorly?

The Joey Downs thread reminded me of a kid here in Bardstown who I think got treated really unfairly a couple years ago, and I've been watching all of this Public vs. Private stuff and really don't know how they get away with it all. But then again, I don't know anything about running anything, so . . .

What do you think?

Seems like a biased poll...4 options if you don't like the KHSAA and 1 if you do.

I felt the same. Some tweaking is necessary but a good organization and I was not given that option.

I think the KHSAA essentially tries to do things the right way, but sometimes gets undermined by outside forces.

I also feel the KHSAA has made some radically bad decisions when it comes to football.

In recent history I believe the KHSAA has suffered from a lack of good leadership.

I think the KHSAA does some good things in certain areas. I think they have a certain people who do an outstanding job and truly care about the student athlete. I have personally worked with Butch, Marilyn and Marsha on several things over the years. They all have been GREAT to work with on any project/situtation that I have needed assistance.

HOWEVER....there is a few individuals who I really wish would just go away!!!

While there certainly are some "tzars" in particular areas of the KHSAA, for the most part they are working toward positive goals in high school sports. I think some of their membership is misguided at times and the KHSAA must then work to overcome their greed, ignorance and bigotry and that makes them seem ineffective at times. A few less "chiefs" and a few more "on the ground" investigators and regulators would help immensely in my book.

What types of decisions have been radically bad in football, in your opinion?

Everything as of late ... six classes, limited interaction between districts in the playoffs. The KHSAA had a great product and tried to fix something that wasn't broken, primarily in reaction to the discord that stems from the longstanding dominance of the two biggest and most successful programs.

My experience with them is that their decisions on eligibility are highly irregular and inconsistent, they have a Hearing Officer that they are constantly overturning, an appeals process with no real timetable, a Commissioner with decision authority but no real appeal, no subpoena power for actual hearings, and a lousy investigation process. It is the most arbitrary and capricious administrative process in the Commonwealth, in my experience.

Personally, your NAZI reference is way out of line....With that said, any administrative organization will have both positive and negative, in their structure and overseeing.

KHSAA does an excellent job, governing all the sports they do and establishing the ByLaws, to regulate them. Are there portions that need changed, tweaked or modified....Yes, all would agree but not easy being the hand that holds the gavel....much easier being the naysayer.

I can think of a few cases concerning eligibility that were swayed in a bias fashion because either the school or player was a threat to the other schools in that class or division. I am not simply referring to the Mike Mitchell case, because that is a very complex example. But some of the cases which they eventually allowed or rejected the eligibility seemed very ridiculous and one sided.

Other than these types of rulings, the KHSAA has not really seemed to come in conflict with anything. Some people have their thoughts about the 6 classes, which I can say that I don't really like the idea, but I have no problem with trying it out and seeing the results. There is no real harm in experimenting for the overall good.

Did not mean to offend with the "Nazi" reference. There are some people that feel that way, though.

Excellent job is streching it. And it has always been the naysayers who keep the gavel in check.

Which cases?
