Kentucky High School Football's "Games of the Century"

Featured Replies

Mayfield hosting Hoptown in 1995.  Cards go up 22-21 with 1:48 left on the clock.  Next possession Hoptown has 4th down on their own 34 yard line and tosses a 66 yard touchdown pass to go up 27-22.  Mayfield runs one last play near midfield.  Mikey Bright catches a pass in double coverage and splits defenders, is running down the sideline and Hoptown defender (Merritt) barely knocks him out of bounds with no time left.  Best/Most memorable high school game I've ever seen.  Best talent I've ever seen on the field between two teams.

I really hope the 2016 Johnson Central Belfry matchup wasn't the last time they meet as truly elite teams.

I don't know about games of the century but that game last week between Glasgow and Barren Co. will be remembered around this community for a long time.

Was a fun game to watch on stream. Just had that feeling of whoever had the ball last was going to win.

There have been quite a few South Warren vs. BG games that come to mind. Especially when South was in 5A and a State Title was on the line. The one that comes to mind the most was in 2023 when BG and South went back and forth the whole game. Under 30 seconds left in the game, South converts a 2 pt conversion to go up 1. BG would then have a solid return on the ensuing kick off before running Hitch Pitch to win the game. BG would go on to win the 5A state title that season. The first of their back to back Titles.

1997 T-X Finals was the foil to 2002 T-Male. Certainly the best defense X has ever had and the Trinity defense was stacked too. Lots of storylines with injured QBs, all-star players like Mattingly, the Jacksons, Wajda, McElroy, Hennessey, etc. and of course the first time these two ever played in a championship. Boscher hits a long FG in freezing temperatures and that was it.

One of the greatest games I've ever seen at any level.

Depends on your definition of elite. 2021 is probably the correct answer, but from 2019-2021 I would think both teams would meet the criteria. 2022 and 2023 neither team mad the semifinal, which is probably the minimum requirement for both these programs to consider themselves elite, no matter what anyone on the outside looking in would think.

2019 Belfry and Johnson Central were both state champs

2020 Both teams made it to the semifinals and lost

2021 Belfry was state champs, JC was state runner up

The most exciting game I ever called during my 30 years broadcasting Marshall County Football was the Marshall/Henderson County game at Henderson in 1998 for the 4A, District 1 Championship. Both were ranked in the top 5 in 4A. Marshall won in triple overtime, 42-41. Marshall's Bobby Sanders and Justin Ard and Henderson's Brian Bivins were all later starters on Murray State's 2002 OVC Championship team.

Both were top 5 teams in 2016. I was at the 2019 game and Johnson Central was probably a top 5 team, Belfry even though they won the state title were not on that level. I don't think Belfry has been a top 5 team since 2016 and Johnson Central probably hasn't since 2019. I would love to see it again.

As a student in Danville in the early 2000s, those games with Boyle when both teams were winning lots of state titles were great.  So many people attended that there wasn't enough seating and you had people lined all the way around the field on the fences.  Just a wild atmosphere that may never be recreated.

The 1993 Prestonsburg vs Danville game may be the personal best game I ever attended. Double overtime with Pburg upsetting Danville and breaking an over 40(correct me if I am wrong) winning streak. Pburg stopped Danville on a two point conversion that Danville fans were furious over. Sam Harp, no words to describe how great he was. That game set a championship game between Pburg and Mayfield. That game was a one point game with a very controversial play against Pburg.

And last comment, the PHS isn't Prestonsburg, it's Pikeville. The Panthers seem to have a love them or loathe them on Bluegrass Preps! LOL
