I am sitting here working and listening to The Herd and Colin just stated emphatically that college football is going to a 24 team playoff.

Is that the case, are we going to a 24 team playoff, if so, when?

And I am all for it.  Either 16 or 24 teams is good with me even though for years I have always advocated for a 16 team playoff. 

RG3 suggested it should be 10 conference champs and then the next 14 by power rating/ranking with the only caveat being no four loss teams get in including conference champs. 

Looks like expansion to 24 teams is all but a done deal. Conferences and teams have agreed and are in negotiations with TV to finalize the money. The negotiation window closes October 9th for this to be in place by next season.

It appears that this may be the last year for Conference Championship Games as that extra week is needed to fit a 24 team playoff into the calendar.

The agreed upon selection format is that the top 23 teams plus 1 G6 (if none are in top 24) team will be in the CFP. Top 8 receive byes with 9-16 hosting first rounds on college campuses.

I love that there aren't a given number of selections tied to any conferences.

The greatest sport in the world continues to marginalize itself, and this has nothing to do with NIL, portals, etc.

The greatest thing about college football was every week meant something. You couldn't afford to jockey for position, slip up, etc. This tournament needs less teams, not more.

College football as we knew it is done. This is now another pro league so might as well set up a playoff like all the other pro leagues.

The best thing about this, if it happens in my opinion, is you will see better scheduling. No reason to play patsies for 2 or 3 games because the goal is, get your strength of schedule up and get the highest ranking that you can.

If you go back through the years on BGP I have always been for a 16 team playoff and then maybe a 17 through 32 edition which I think would also be a big hit. Especially since money would be injected into all of it and the players could get paid well.

Moving to 24 teams is fine and it getting rid of conference championship games is a good thing. Now the college football season will mean more to a lot of teams/fans. Take the state of Kentucky this year, if there was going to be a 24 team playoff we could potentially have two teams in the playoffs along with UT, OSU, IU, etc. I think that would be GREAT!!

Assuming all that plays out, the era of college football bowl games is over. I imagine they will continue to play those final few games at the big traditional bowls stadiums but everything else is done.

Coaches are either going to love or hate 24 teams.

On one hand, it makes it much easier to make the playoffs. The flip side of that, you don't get to miss the playoffs at a lot of P4 schools and keep your job.

Those lower tier bowl games are just participation trophies.

They may be that, but those early lower tier bowls often give us some fun and exciting games to watch. I'd hate to have LESS football to watch in December. If teams are willing to play, then I'm not going to be a hater if a 6-6 team plays a 7-5 team in late December.

I say junk them. With a 24 team playoff we have what we need and if we want more do another "NIT like" playoff, not individual yucky games.

Agree. I haven't paid any attention to thosegames in years. When I have come across one on TV, the stadiums are empty. Filling a TV schedule is the only thing that kept them afloat.

We used to have consistently around 17-20 bowl games, back in the 80s. A 24 team playoff would presumably be 23 games. So that'd be right on par with the better days back then.

I'm not a fan of this, I had no problem with 16 and thought that 16 was good, even ideal. 24 is just too many in my opinion and I didn't think it should extend past 16.
